The thing in you post about not using American to only mean people from the usa I sort of disagree with. I live in Canada and everyone here would rather be called anything else than ‘American’ simply because everyone would think we’re from the states especially since we have mostly the same accents and language as them. Most Canadians have a weird thing where above all they want people to know they aren’t from the states so we tend to never call ourselves Americans. Just a different perspective I thought I’d share!

Where I'm from, we are also taught that "American" means people from the USA. Most people here will think the same way Canadians do. I've only learned about "American" meaning the people from the continent of America from talking with people from Latin America over the internet.

So I don't have a very personal view experience of the matter as I am from Asia but I do believe in inclusivity. Back in the late 2000s and early 2010s, "Asian" on the internet was construed to only mean East Asians. It took a lot of effort for people to say "hey, Asians don't just come from three countries!" and change this narrative. In this aspect, I can somewhat relate to people from Latin America with the issue on their continental identifier. Being excluded from your identifier is not a fun experience. Hence why I've started (or at least try, it's hard to unlearn frankly) to use US American so I don't exclude people from Latin America who also identify as American.

I don't think my knowledge on the matter is enough though. I am just coming from a place of inclusivity as someone whose continental identifier once excluded my people. It is not my place to tell Canadians whether or not they should call themselves Americans (as in from the continents, not USA) or not. I do hope that you guys find a common ground though. Rather than me, this conversation is something that people from The Americas should be having as it is something that affects you guys.
