hey hun, I actually just found your tumblr looking at the natural hair tag. your hair is so gorgeous.. I have relaxed hair that's a bit past shoulder length and i want to go natural and looking at pictures of girls with hair like yours is such an inspiration. i'm just nervous about the big chop. did you do the big chop or have you always been natural.. got any tips... lol im just so nervous
Hey!! Thank you so much. I also enjoy looking at women who have a more course kinky, curly hair like mine. It sets a real expectation for those of us who don't have the 3c and 4a hair, as well as allows for the appreciation of it. I LOVE my texture. I have Been relaxed since I was 5 or 6 and I big chopped back in October 2008. I attempted to transition, but I just couldn't handle the two textures. I didn't really get the hang of my hair until my 3rd year of being natural. The first two years were all about trial and error lol. I wear my hair out about 2-3 months total periodically throughout the year. I mostly wear wigs, half wigs, and twists. I found for my hair the less manipulation, the healthier my hair. My tips would be:1. Whether you big chop or transition, do what YOU want. If you're not comfortable with short hair, grow it out for however long you can while maintaining the health of your hair. Twists, weaves, wigs and other protective styles can help you. Which leads to my next tip..2. Maintain the health of your hair. For natural girls, that means moisture, hunty! Be sure you are keeping your hair nicely moisturized. I usually use a liquid (I prefer water, but some use liquid based moisturizers like wave novue), oil (my hair loves olive oil), and a cream/butter...in that order. It's gonna take some time but you will eventually figure out what works for you.3. Clean hair! The cleaner your hair, the better your hair will be able to absorb moisture. I wash my hair about 2x a month with shampoo. Other times I use apple cider vinegar to lift the dirt and cowash, when needed. I find washing in sections is most helpful. I use Naptural85's method.4. Patience! Take your time to research and experiment what works for you. That's the key. Trial and error.I ain't no natural hair guru, but this has helped me. I hope I shed done light on natural hair for you. Let me know if you have anymore questions. Thanks for stopping by!-peaceluvndope
