How do you deal with hate on your tumblr? (If you get any) I posted my opinion on something and people got upset and started reblogging telling me to “sit down”. I don’t want to delete it because it’s my blog and it’s getting a lot of likes and reblogs but idk I just feel eerie.
Hey nonnycakes, I’m sorry to hear that tumblr has been less than kind to you as of late. I really wish that weren’t the case because hate is never the answer, it’s the root of problems in the first place.
I’ve joked with a friend on here, @paperlesscrown, that anonymous hate (and hate in general) in a fandom can be a bit like angry baby Lord Voldemort. The internet becomes mob like in its mentality that, when faceless, it’s alright and acceptable to be disrespectful and unkind to others. Anything and anyone becomes fair game for unchecked vitriol. This is incredibly unfortunate.
Fandoms are a place where people from all across the globe come together to celebrate passion and joy in a creative entity that they love. It’s a place where it doesn’t matter what you look like, your paycheck, where you came from, or what trials you bear. We can all still come together to celebrate joy, move others, and make a positive impact on another persons day. Fandom can be beautiful and limitless - a meet up where friendship, creativity, and learning can flourish. The unfortunate side is that it can also be a place of hate, disrespect, and disregard for another persons feelings. The facelessness of the internet can be a blessing and a curse.
When it comes to hate in fandom I deal with it the only way I can. I do my best to accept it and move on. I don’t address it, I don’t respond to it, and I don’t engage with it. I am here to curate my own experience. My blog is one that will always be positive. If someone feels the need to try to bring me down, it’s incredibly unfortunate, but I can’t change that for them. The phrases of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” and “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it all” that we learned as children apply even as we are adults. Do your best to be respectful, even when you have a differing opinion, and put the joy you want to receive out into the world.
Don’t let the hate get you down! Fandom is full of wonderful, kind, welcoming people. Your post is on your blog and, as long as it’s respectful, I don’t see why you need to take it down. Peer pressure and hate are eerie but my advice would be that the best thing to do is to maintain a respectful demeanor yourself and move past it.
