There’s a long pause before he speaks. A pause he spends looking toward her with a frown. A sigh, as he buries his face in his hands. There’s a distant flicker of hope that if he stays like this for long enough, she’ll give up on him and leave him be; walk away defeated.

When she doesn’t budge, he looks up begrudgingly. Taking his hands away and shaking his head. He looks tired, among other things, as though he hasn’t gotten a wink of sleep in days. There’s a good chance that’s the case, too.

”No—”

It’s not true. He’s convinced himself, and he supposes its time to start convincing her, too. They don’t need each other, not anymore. They’re not good for one another, he can see that now. So he gives it to her straight; nothing cryptic, as blunt as can be.

”I don’t.” Rubbing at his forehead, he glances away. “I don’t need you.”
