It was hard preparing for a date with the enemy. They couldn’t be seen together in the common areas, so she had to use her room as the venue. 

She had placed a small table and chairs in the middle of her room. It was cozy and not all that romantic-looking, but it would have to do. For their dining pleasures, she made her favourite from home: toad in the hole. Not a very appetising name, but it was simple enough to make.

Elias sat at the kitchen table, a pile of waffles and bacon in front of him. The whole thing was drenched in maple syrup (the real kind, not that brown corn syrup), and the delicious, sticky mess had his mouth watering. Making sure he was alone and wouldn’t have to share with anyone, he cut out a wedge of waffle and stuffed it into his mouth with his fork. “Hey.” Abigail walked into the common room carrying a tray of homemade cupcakes. “It’s my birthday,” she said, although her party hat made that obvious. “So I thought I’d just make a little treat for everyone.”

“Tea?” Dot smiled, although only half her smile could be seen under her mask. Today she wasn’t wearing her work uniform, instead she wore a black sweater  and cargo pants. Maybe not the most attractive outfit, but it was comfortable. 

“It appears I’ve made too much and I don’t want it to go to waste.”

Liam rolled his eyes with a smile as he set to cutting the veggies she's tasked him to chop for whatever she was cooking. "Lass, I'm a surgeon, I know me way around a knife. Wouldn' be doin' wha' I'm doin' if I didn' have steady hands. This veg is no match for me."

Liam swallowed, idly swirling his glass of whiskey, a flush at his cheeks. 

“Urm.. As ya might know, datin’s ne’er been me strong suit. I was less outgoin’ in secondary an’ uni so it was even worse. Th’ most awkward date had ta be when me folks tried ta get me ta date a neighbor girl. Think they were still convinced I was jus’ interested in menfolk, when really I dun’ ‘ave a preference. It was still awkward though.” He sighed, taking a hefty swig of his drink.

“Me folks would invite her ta tea on th’ regular an’.. an’ try ta push us together. It wasn’ fair ta her because she was lovely, I jus’ didn’ wan’ anythin’ ta do wit’ wha’ me folks were tryin’ ta do. I dun’ think I e’er saw her again after I left fer uni.”
