CATCH ME UP ON THIS ASSASSIN WIP??? YOU'RE MAKING A SCREENPLAY???
SJJSJSJSJS I THINK I AM !!! it was meant to be a novel but i decided the story is PERFECT for a tv show so THAT'S WHAT I'M GONNA DO BE PREPARED
I know I'm not a part of this conversation about the assassin wip, but it's interesting me. I'm wondering why you're defaulting to having your assassin self-label as a villain? Why can't they see themselves as a hero? Maybe they believe that the people they're killing actually deserve it, and the money puts food on their loved ones table. I think it'd be far more interesting to have an assassin like that face up against people who see them as a villain and have them stand their ground
Yeah, see, Throne of Glass did that thing and I thought it was kinda cheap.
Celaena had a choice in which people she killed and she killed only people she considered to be evil and “bad”, that way SJM didn’t have to deal with Celaena being considered a bad person. She only kills “bad” people, you see, so she’s not actually morally grey, she’s a good person!
At the same time, Celaena was presented as having regrets over the people she killed, and her “trainer” is presented as a bad guy despite the fact that he apparently didn’t make her kill people she didn’t want to kill. So Celaena gets to both be smug about how badass and cool she is and fantasize about murdering people, she gets to escape actually being morally grey by only killing bad guys, but she also tries to pretend to be damaged and sad and regret all those deaths (of those supposedly bad people) she caused.
SJM also never dealt with the fact that Celaena was playing god the entire time by picking and choosing whom she killed, by using her morality as a guide instead of money as a motivator.
I don’t want to write a character who plays god and believes she’s right doing it. I can’t personally relate to that sorta character. And I know I said that this assassin would believe she was a villain, but I kind of simplified what I wanted to say and expressed myself wrong, I think?
I don’t want to write someone who thinks she’s a villain, I want to write someone who’s realistic and has a neutral view on what she’s doing. Most people would consider her a villain, though, and she doesn’t mind thinking that too, since to her, morality just gets in the way. Hero? Villain? Who cares, at the end of the day?
She’s just doing her job. And if people think that makes her a villain, then that’s, like, whatever.
I also usually default to main characters who have negative views of themselves, because I find that to be more relatable personally. I don’t want to write someone who’s playing god and is delusional about their own actions, I just don’t have that patience.
I want to write someone who’s aware that yeah, maybe she’s not perfect, and she defo has done some questionable things, so maybe picking her as a great hero is not the best choice.
I’m playing with the idea of having her have a family that she’s doing this for, but again, I probably wouldn’t write her as seeing herself as a hero, even if she’s doing it for her loved ones. She’d be someone who’s doing what she needs to to survive.
I’m also a sucker for heroes who don’t believe in themselves but try to do good anyway, despite what they think and what everyone else thinks of them.
Idk maybe that’s just me.
So yeah, I “default” to an assassin who thinks she’s not very heroic/villainous because I’m just not interested in the idea of writing someone who’s playing god.
If I started out the story with her believing that she’s a hero who’s doing the right thing, her journey would have to be about her learning that … playing god is bad? Killing people you think are wrong is bad?
You said that she has to “stand her ground” against people who doubt her, but I dunno if I could write someone like that, because I don’t think she’d be in a position I could defend, from a narrative or moral perspective. Because I don’t think you should call someone who thinks murdering people they think are bad a hero.
I’d rather write about someone who learns that they can do good despite a shitty past and a shitty opinion of themself.
I’m more interested in writing redemption stories than repeating stuff most people already know.
(Your approach also presents a bunch of logistical questions that I won’t get into, like for example who’s paying to get these “evil” people removed when it’s usually those same people who employ assassins against their enemies, and it also implies that she rejects contracts if she doesn’t think someone is bad enough to kill, which doesn’t fit with the idea of her doing this for her family.)
sksksks i really don‘t know what to do with my assassin wip,,, on one hand i wanted it to be a wlm romance with lgbt characters, on the other hand i could make it a friends to forbidden lovers gay romance between the jester and the king and every part of that would be awesome
i've officially started writing my assassin wip (which is now a tv show as planned) and i already love it so much. i have such a clear picture in my head and i love neitsu to death
guess what this mess (aka me) is working on instead of her nano wip
denmi and neitsu literally only met because they so happened to attend the same college at the same time (though neitsu, immortal as he is, was way older than denmi) and the second neitsu found out the future KING was attending the very same college, he just HAD TO prank him really really badly and ended up in the royal dungeon skskksks
rereading Assassin wip and feeling a lot of ways about how much i didn’t write this year, all of them not great. also it turns out the scenes i wrote inspired by That Scene in Queen of Attolia are kinda traumatic, who knew?
