DADA Assignment #1
Assignment: Counter-Jinx
Words: 223
'When dealing with a Jinx, other than simply standing still and taking it to the face, a witch has two options: Preventing it with the use of an Anti-Jinx or returning it to the caster by using a Counter-Jinx. If put as plainly as this then yes, Slinkhard is correct in saying that a Counter-Jinx is intended with just as much harm as a Jinx.
I wouldn't, however, call it a misnomer as the definition of a misnomer is "a wrong or inaccurate name" and the name 'Counter-Jinx' is the most accurate name that a spell designed to counter Jinxes could possibly have. 'Greater-Jinx' sounds stupid and 'Jinx-To-Counter-Another-Jinx' is simply too long.
In my agreement with Slinkhard earlier, I didn't take into account the intention behind the spells. A Jinx is a spell meant to inflinct 'pain' (or annoyance) onto another person, whereas a Counter-Jinx is meant to deflect this 'pain' back onto the caster. As such, a Counter-Jinx is simply, if I'm allowed to word it as such, a pre-emptive payback. If I believed in Karma, it would be 'Receiving what you give' and I can totally get behind that.
I have personally never used nor witnessed a Counter-Jinx, but my uncle used to do a lot of duelling. Legally, of course. I can imagine that he would use Counter-Jinxes on occasion.'
