A Closer Look at Some of the Creative Talent Making Things Happen In Alberta: Scott Lepp | Executive Producer | Iylond Entertainment

Scott was previously Associate Producer and Digital Producer for CBC’s HEARTLAND and served on the board of directors for the Alberta Motion Picture Industry Association (AMPIA). He continues to serve on the board of directors for the Okotoks Film Society.

Can you please provide a brief overview of your journey in the film and TV industry?

I started my career in journalism in Lethbridge and made my first documentary in 2004 as a final project in college. It was nominated for Best Student Production at the Rosie Awards and to say I caught the filmmaking bug would be an understatement. After moving to Vancouver for film school, I returned to the Calgary area and won the career lottery, getting hired as the Producer’s Assistant on Heartland. I spent 11 seasons working on that series, being mentored by some of the best Producers in the country. In order to take the next step of my career I needed to show that I can Produce content on my own, so I started Producing short films before moving on to Feature Films and Digital Series in my spare time. Once I had gained the necessary experience, I had the great pleasure of joining the Producing team for the Tribal TV Series, taking over as Producer for Season Two. Now, I run my production company, Iylond Entertainment, full time currently using smaller projects to keep the lights on while placing a large focus on developing unique and marketable IP to Produce in Alberta.

Have there been any key moments in your career that changed your trajectory?

There have been several career-defining moments but two of them stand out the most. Firstly, I absolutely loved and I appreciate my time and experience on the series’ Heartland and Tribal, but the best and most impactful decisions I’ve made that launched my trajectory upwards, was moving on from them. Secondly, being introduced to writer-director Sandi Somers late fall of 2013 changed everything without me knowing. Here we are now eleven years later with several collaborations in the books and a third film in development.

Adecco is currently recruiting for an Associate Producer for an 18-Month contract with our Client in Vancouver, BC. The ideal candidate has experience working in Large-scale multiplayer games.

The Associate Producer will have the following responsibilities: •Assist with the design features and multiplayer design structure; •Proactively identify dependencies and risks associated with meeting project milestones; •Create, update, and present status and information to provide ‘real-time' visibility of shared development efforts to the Studio Leadership team; •Administer project related processes internal and external to the team, such as running scrums to identify dependencies and roadblocks; •Handle the formal and informal organizational communication with stakeholders; •Project development with emphasis on team empowerment; •Milestone planning, execution, and evaluation; •Communicate goals to the team and motivate them to execute on time and at a high-quality level; •Management of both internal and outsourced development teams. The Associate Producer must meet the following mandatory requirements: •3+ years of experience in Project Management por production experience, ideally on Console products; •Experience shipping games as a product (ideally AAA quality); •Production experience working in various methodologies (Agile, Scrum, Waterfall); •Strong understanding of the game development cycle and expected creative process

An associate producer (AP) is someone who supervises the production of a movie. Whether hired by a studio or working on his own, APs oversee all aspects of movie production, including choosing the story; planning, writing, shooting, and editing the script; and negotiating financing. As the producer's personal representative, he coordinates with the crew, directors, producers, and actors.

Although there are a lot of APs, some of the most popular have been: Billy Ray Cyrus, Michael Eisner, Steve Burke, George Clooney, Martin Scorsese, Don Murphy, Amy Pascal, and Jason Reitman.

The first step to becoming an AP is to have been producing films for at least a year. During this time, you will be able to prove your worth to potential clients. At this point, you can start looking for work in the movie industry. You can do this either as a part-timer or by finding other projects that you can join.

In order to become an associate producer, one must demonstrate the ability to effectively manage the flow of information in a group. If you show this ability to the right clients, you will become an AP. Since you will be responsible for planning and organizing different aspects of the production process, you need to be able to prioritize and communicate effectively with those you are involved with.

In addition to being an important member of the team, you must also understand how the business works to become an associate producer. The people in your office may not know what to expect from you. You can't assume that they will know what is going on if you don't tell them. Therefore, they will be wary about giving you their valuable information unless you make it clear that you will give them their needs and not yours.

You must also be willing to delegate certain tasks to an associate producer. This person must be able to fulfill the job in an organized manner. In most cases, this will require the assistance of another team member who will take over tasks that the associate producer has failed to complete or can't handle.

There are many benefits to becoming an effective producer. The first one is that you will get to network with different people. You may even be able to develop friendships and find yourself working side-by-side with movie stars and directors.

Becoming an AP isn't a guarantee, though. You may need to work hard and produce a few movies before you get the job of your dreams. However, as long as you are willing to put in the effort, you will eventually find success and be on your way to the top.

So, what is it that a successful movie producer does? A producer must have strong leadership skills. Without them, he or she will not be able to lead a team effectively. In addition, a producer must have the ability to organize information. This means that he or she must be able to plan and coordinate the flow of information among the various departments of the production.

As an associate producer, you must also have the ability to communicate well with other people. This is critical if you want to get along in a production environment. It is also vital to your success, because people are the driving force of a movie. If you are able to communicate well with other team members, you will have greater control over how you interact with your team.

Another important factor in being an effective producer is being able to think fast. Because movies are shot on a strict schedule, you must know when it is time to get to the next scene. If you aren't on time, you won't be able to continue to keep track of everything.

Finally, as an associate producer, you must also be committed to keeping yourself informed. In order to get your name in front of people, you must be able to keep yourself abreast of all the new trends and news related to the movie production. This is so you can remain competitive in the field.
