Spanish explorers brought chocolate back to the Old World from the New World in the 17th century. Chocolate was thought to possess aphrodisiac qualities and became the candy of choice for lovers. Thought to be the favorite flower of Venus, Goddess of Love, the rose became synonymous with the strong feelings associated with love.
