Warning: There’s No Turning Back When You Blast into Space with ASTRAL MASS!

Indianapolis space wayfarers ASTRAL MASS return with their self-titled album, building off their three song debut EP, 'All Systems Go' (2016). For those that have visited it, you may recognize a few of the songs on from this EP on the new record, 'Astral Mass' (2017). Adding in four additional tracks and totalling the length to near forty-five minutes, we have a perfectly timed full-length recording, without even one moment of repetition or predictability.

Astral Mass starts with a total kick in the teeth that is "Matter Smasher," which sets the tone for the album as a whole. Vocalist and bassist Mike Naish (also the current bassist for Indianapolis doom stalwarts Apostle of Solitude) belts out like an intergalactic conquistadors bent on domination. His vocal approach is perfect for this type of space rock. While he utilizes his regular talking voice, he projects it so boldly without ever going into harsh territory. Guitarist Jeff Kaleth beefed up riffs and spaced out solos hearken to Orange Goblin riffs meeting new heights. There is certainly the vibe that you are traveling through space in a vessel powered solely by the riffs.

For anyone who may be a fan of Monster Magnet, "Desert Planet Ritual" could be right up your alley. Here we have a restrained Astral Mass, allowing the riffs and Kaleth's commandeering solos to speak for themselves. While "Desert Planet Ritual" bludgeons you with riffs and images of desolation, "Apollo's Hand" offers a more subdued experience. Frontman Mike Naish has one hell of a performance, teaming up with drummer Nick Ciobotaru to naturally create the bleeding heartbeat of this track. The bass is groovy, the guitar is psychedelic, and Naish's rugged voice is out of this world.

I especially love the closing track "Jovian Winds," which features guitarist Jeff Kaleth soaking up some spotlight on vocals. While the shortest track on the album, this one might pack the most punch. Those of us fortunate to live local to Astral Mass have been able to see this one performed frequently, I'm happy to see it made the record.

While Astral Mass are a pretty new band, there is a lot of experience between these three guys. Their roster includes local names like Apostle of Solitude, The Heavy Company, Sleepbringer, Dead Limb, Shroud of Vulture and probably even more I'm forgetting. One noticeable difference between All Systems Go and Astral Mass is that the songs have picked up more energy and aggression, all while still remaining a space rock band.

Astral Mass does a lot of space roaming without ever getting too spaced out. A lot of thoughtfulness was obviously put into these seven tracks. No two songs are alike and while stoner-doom might not be the most versatile music, there's something for mostly everyone. Want a fun instrumental? Check out "Clear the Tower." Care for an energetic track with over the top riffs? You gotta check out "Rise Armada." This is the way stoner rock is meant to be played -- boldly and valiantly through the reaches of outer space!
