Thinking about an updated canon for Blue. She’s an extremely gifted telepath (blue lace agates are supposed to help w communication), so I imagine she would have been something of an elite enforcer. Blue would’ve mainly dealt with higher profile criminals and gems the aristocracy wanted gone. Since her strength is mostly mental, she likely had a Quartz or Ruby guard to ensure her safety.

In this update, she’d still be estranged from Homeworld. But the disconnect isn’t caused by disillusionment. Rather, she did her job too well and upset the wrong gems. Didn’t help that her guard double-crossed her in the hopes of attaining a higher status.

Idk where to go from there... still have some stuff to ponder. But I like the idea of Blue learning empathy over time.

so I’m descending further into gem hell by trying to shove another oc into a gem canon. gonna just stick my raw brainstormy thoughts under the cut.

I’m considering Jades as some sort of forerunner to Peridots... metaphysically jade helps with employment/careers like peridot does. jade is also used for decision-making, prosperity, and concentration (among other things). thematically, I think it would fit as a tech-oriented gem. but since Homeworld gems embody the opposite qualities, it could be that Jades were thinkers but not doers. they were intelligent enough but increasingly lost the motivation to take plans and see them to fruition. Homeworld doesn’t have patience for the brilliant but lazy, so Jades were decommissioned and replaced by Peridots.

but although Jades weren’t what Homeworld had in mind, they still held a measure of worth because of their intelligence. instead of shattering the remaining Jade gems, they were shifted to the side as tech support. meanwhile, Peridots took over as the main engineers. there’s animosity between Jades and Peridots because of this, with the latter group believing themselves superior to their predecessors. 

all of this circles back to how I’m developing that oc as a gem... since I have a problem and am having too much fun to keep myself in check. but. I figure being a Peridot wouldn’t suit him bc he’s more of the type to tell someone how to build or fix something instead of doing it himself. he takes life slowly and has enough patience to wade through unpleasant conversations on how to properly use a piece of tech.

Black Diamond: leader of the infamous Black Diamond Gang. organic fusion of a Diamond and something... else. has very shady goals that few are privy to. an enemy to the Diamond Authority and wanted terrorist. known for their enigmatic smiles, cold demeanor, and calculating nature. gem location -- breastbone abilities include -- eating Gems and absorbing the energy weapon -- broken sword

Black Lace Onyx: a member of the Black Diamond Gang. was once an experiment developed for Homeworld prison camps, but later rejected their intended purpose. staged a jailbreak and freed the prisoners they had befriended. they took to a life of crime afterwards using the knowledge they had gained from the camp's inmates. gem location -- nape of the neck abilities include -- energy drain, which boosts their own stamina, speed, durability, and mood weapon -- scarf

Black Opal: former member of the Black Diamond Gang and a wanted outlaw. they're on the lamb from Gem Homeworld. location currently unknown. dangerous, unpredictable, enchanting. Black Opal is wanted for heinous crimes against Gemkind. was involved with a Magnetite but seems to have ended that partnership for good. gem location – forehead abilities include – powerful hypnosis weapon – unknown

Blue Lace Agate: renegade gem, her original purpose was to act as an ambassador for the Gem Homeworld. but she became horrified with her role as a manipulator and abandoned her mission. has taken to traveling the cosmos but became marooned on Earth after experiencing ship failure. gem location – tongue abilities include – telepathy weapon – tuning fork

Blue Sandstone: a subordinate of Blue Diamond and a scout for Homeworld. vi keeps vir head down and does what vi’re told but vi secretly questions the status quo. although vi keeps to virself, vi’re rather lonesome and wonder if there’s more to life. gem location – left breast abilities include – spacial manipulation weapon – plasma axe

Magnetite: wanted outlaw, currently split after a falling out with her partner in crime. known to be sadistic, ruthless and cunning. has a curiosity towards organic life. would be bent on revenge if she could stay in one piece. gem location – breastbone abilities include – manipulation of magnetic fields weapon – ion cannon (note: not a summoned weapon)

Magnetite Twins, (North + South): the remnants of Magnetite, split into two equal halves. can form the original Magnetite if they fuse together but have difficulty maintaining her form because of the physical damage. they do not remember their time as Magnetite, though she is able to recall her time as the twins. gem location – breastbone abilities include – minor manipulation of magnetic fields (ability becomes stronger when they are working in tandem) weapon – none

Spectrolite: a defective Labradorite created through artificial means. she can't maintain her physical form without concerted effort. incredibly young by Gem standards and is ignorant of Gem culture due to her circumstances. currently a member of Dolomite's Court, but holds no special loyalty to the King. something of fangirl for Labradorite Gems and will get flustered around them. gem location -- mid-torso abilities include -- intangibility, flight weapon -- unknown

just some miscellaneous stuff about Spectrolite. last night’s rp sort of got me thinking.

outside of her escape from Kindergarten, Spectrolite has no other prior experiences with Gems. she was alone in her travels and did not meet anyone until arriving on Doloven. this is the first time she’s interacted with other Gems and quite often she doesn’t know what to make of those she’s met.

continuing from the above, she’s very ignorant of Gem culture because of her lack of experience. if asked simple questions like ‘Who is Yellow Diamond?’ or ‘What is a Peridot’s purpose?’ she would not be able to answer them. this can lead her to being insensitive towards others’ struggles because she lacks a frame of reference for their conflicts. (ex: not knowing Pearls are viewed as accessories/servants and how that can weigh on them psychologically, being unaware that fusion outside of one’s Gem type is considered an action worthy of shattering)

she doesn’t understand fusion --not just on an emotional level, but as a concept altogether. she gets that it’s something Gems can do... but beyond that it makes little sense to her. she’s heard it’s for intimacy and she’s heard it’s for practicality. she’s heard it’s something that just kind of happens sometimes. the varying explanations confuse her and, generally, she will avoid bringing up fusion as a topic because she doesn’t want to be bombarded with even more descriptions. that and it’s a guaranteed way to fluster her because she gets frustrated at her own lack of understanding. at the moment she prefers to just observe fusions and fusing from afar. that way she can gather information and slowly form an opinion herself when the time comes.

Spectrolite is a mistake, in that she was meant to be one Gem and developed into a different one. that’s part of the reason her physical state is a mess (...that and I like to be punny). fusing with her could prove to be dangerous, if it’s even possible. it’s incredibly likely that whatever fusion came out of the union would be unstable.

she smells artificially sweet, like fruity body wash.

there’s an echoing quality to her voice. she singsongs her words, drawing out vowels in something of a howl or yodel.

she developed something of a small crush on the Labradorite that helped her escape. she’s already come to terms with the fact that she will probably never see them again (years of traveling alone in space can do that for you). but the crush has influenced her ‘type’ and she’s become a fangem for Labradorites (or ‘Labs’ as she affectionately refers to them).

I went ahead and submitted the rp app! Hopefully it looks okay. I reused the pic of Spectrolite that’s already on here so... nothing to post art-wise. But I’ll share the info I stuck on the app.

Name: Spectrolite Alignment: Dolomite and Her Court Rank: Pawn Gender: Agender Gem Type: Feldspar Gem Location: Lower torso, spanning between the lower part of a human's ribcage to the belly button area. Height: Varies Weapon: ? Spectrolite has difficulty maintaining her general form. Most of her energy goes into keeping herself semi-corporeal. She may very well possess a weapon, but at the moment she can't muster enough power to summon it. Unique Abilities: She can float as well as pass through solid objects. Special Power: It's not so much a power, but Spectrolite is relatively intangible. She's transparent and it's possible to stick your arm through her --though she would prefer if you didn't because it's kind of forward. Since she can't maintain her form well, she's not a great shapeshifter. It's pretty common to see her abstract, which can vary from her legs fusing together to resembling a cloud. Personality: Spectrolite is always living in the moment and once that moment has passed, she moves on to a new one. That's not to say that she has a short attention span. Rather, there's just so much to do and so much to see in this universe that she doesn't feel she has the time to dally for long. She's instinctive and impulsive. Often times she doesn't think about the consequences her actions can have. Sometimes this makes her a pretty petty Gem. But for the most part, she means well. History: Spectrolite is a gem aberration and was originally meant to be a Labradorite. When the overseer of her Kindergarten noticed she was off, they quickly attempted to shatter her gem. She was able to escape through the help of a Labradorite who she unfortunately lost contact with after fleeing. Spectrolite eventually heard rumors of a haven for Gems that did not meet the Diamond standard. Shortly after, she found her way to Dolomite's court. While she does not have a fierce attachment or loyalty to Dolomite she respects her cause and the compassion that drove her to help other Gems. Synchronizing Style/Fusion Dance: She can't dance. It's a physical impossibility. But Spectrolite tends to "swim" around her fusion partner in a way that makes her resemble a mermaid. Other: She's very young by Gem standards... not even a century old.

I want to start figuring out themes for my gems, since I’m working at developing them. Black Opal, like a lot of my gems, is based off an existing oc of mine. I already associate that oc with The Weeknd’s the Hills… so an instrumental of the same song seemed pretty fitting for their gem canon.

Gem Views on Fusion... and stuff (warning for mentions of manipulation and coercion)

Black Opal -- uses it to manipulate other Gems, viewing fusion like some view sex. They see it as a means to an end and a way to trap others and hold control over them. They’re seductive and coercive, promising intimacy and understanding that does not come inherently to Gem culture. But all they really want is additional power and, on a superficial level, to be a beautiful giant nb gay rock the likes of which the universe hasn’t seen. Black Opal is toxic to fuse with, whether over time or through multiple fusions. The initial fusion is humanoid but becomes more monstrous with each iteration. Their personality usually has the stronger influence on the resulting fusion because of their hypnotic abilities... that and they’re a high-maintenance, demanding jerkface. 

Blue Lace Agate -- initially held Homeworld’s viewpoint but changed her mind after having to fuse with a different type of Quartz out of necessity. Her telepathic abilities made the experience more intimate than she bargained for. Blue became more curious about it after that but did not have the opportunity to fuse again until she defected from Homeworld and became marooned on Earth. She found the experience just as strange but extremely pleasant, and hopes to get a better understanding of the emotional complexity and closeness that fusion can bring.

Blue Sandstone -- has never fused and has little reason to because vir role as a scout often has vir working alone. Vi has witnessed the emotional side of fusion and as a result, vi finds fusion both interesting and intimidating. Blue Sandstone is often lonely and wishes to have more interactions with other Gems. Vi fantasizes about fusing but never shares these thoughts with others, too afraid of the consequences... whether it be rejection, harm to vir person, or someone actually offering to fuse with vir. 

Magnetite -- held no opinion on it before she hooked up with Black Opal. The intimacy and rush of power excited her. She became addicted to it, enjoying the feeling of being herself, being someone else, and being something completely and utterly new. It was common for her to search out fusion partners while she was still whole. She was just as seductive about fusion as her former compatriot, though much less manipulative. To her, it was a fun way to spend some time than anything serious. Now that she is broken, it is unclear if her addiction to fusion remains. She is far more concerned with revenge during the brief periods of time she makes a reappearance.

The Twins -- don’t understand fusion. They get the basic concept of it but the complicated nature of it eludes them. Thankfully the Twins have not retained Magnetite’s addiction to fusing because they cannot remember being her. The Twins’ fusions have largely been instinctual. Though they don’t get along, they often feel a strong desire to be with each other anyway. It’s common for them to fuse together without thinking, and at times, it seems like they’re doing so in a trance. As stated before, when the Twins fuse they form the original Magnetite. But they can’t retain her form for long because of the physical damage to her gem. It is unknown whether they can fuse with other Gems... though if it is possible, there’s a possibility the fusion might be corrupt.

The Magnetite Twins!

The Twins are the remaining pieces of Magnetite, having formed from the perfectly split pieces of her gem. “North” is the gem that regenerated from the top half of Magnetite’s gem while “South” regenerated from the bottom half. They are polar opposites, exhibiting the extreme sides of Magnetite’s personality. North is the more reserved twin while South is... intrusively outgoing. They have a poor relationship with one another, often arguing and nitpicking each other’s flaws. 

The Twins do not remember their time as Magnetite but retain a mistrust of other Gems because of Magnetite’s rage over Black Opal’s betrayal. If the two attempt to fuse, they will form the original Magnetite. She retains the Twins’ experiences with their human caretaker and seems to be softening as a result. But because the Twins do not get along well, their time as the original Magnetite is often brief. Like the original Magnetite they do not have a weapon, instead having the ability to control magnetic fields. Their powers are much stronger when they have a physical link to one another than if each twin attempted to use the ability alone.
