This could be a review of most of the outdoor fountains at Binghamton. Many don't have any real difference between them. Obviously this is the result of a package deal  between the university and Haws, a company well-known for its outdoor fountains, for the fountains in the Athletic Complex. An outdoor fountain on this campus is rare (discounting the Infinity Fountain, which WILL get its own review, just you wait), outside of that sprawling athletic complex near the Events Center.

If you're not a major sports fan or a Division I athlete yourself, you're not going to touch most of these fountains. Which is why this one over by the gazebo is singled out. The most important feature of this fountain sounds like a real estate pitch: location, location, location.

Why location? Well, this fountain is down under the gazebo overlooking the tennis complex, right near the road to campus. Now, I first used this fountain on a walk back from Buffet Star, back in October. It was a very welcome diversion, and only really needed for a quick walk down a muddy hill. For an outdoor fountain, that's surprisingly convenient. The water was cold and clear and refreshed my mouth, dry from MSG-laden buffet food. I think I fell in love, just for the convenience. No outdoor fountain beats it.

The next time I used the fountain was when I took these pictures, back during Homecoming weekend (October 13th, and boo to UVM). That was when I first noticed the little tag. "Attention: This is a freeze-proof drinking fountain and has a delayed water action. Press button and wait. Thank you." That's great. In fact, it was something I had not seen before. An outdoor fountain that is able to work even when it's freezing out! What a great feature for this fountain, that I could drink from it in the dead of winter!

The third time I tried to use it, it was some time in mid-November, on the way to the liquor store (ed note: I'm over 21, so it's okay). I pressed the button and waited. And waited. And nothing came out. Apparently, the school closes down the entire outdoor athletic complex during the winter season, and that includes the water supply. How disappointing. If you're going to have freeze-proof fountains, the least you can do is keep it open to students who try to use it when it's freezing out!

Sadly, the fountains only opened up when the athletic complex did, which was some time in early March. (Which is why I've waited to review this one.) What a disappointment. The convenience points that were gained are nearly irrelevant now. What use to the public is a fountain that can only be used for half of the school year, at most?

Now, let's talk a little about the fountain itself. Once the wait ends, the water is great; smooth and clear as crystal. It's cold, but not too cold that it might freeze your teeth. The button might be in an awkward position. The fountain itself juts out from an "L"-shaped pipe, with the bowl that acts as the basin standing, almost precariously, atop a hanging limb. The button, at the sort of tail of that "L", provides no sensitivity because of the delayed effect. One must stand over the fountain, holding the button (at my height [5'9"], it was at about waist level) for a few seconds. I am an advocate of pressure sensitivity in fountains, and it's disappointing that this seems to lack that. But that is not the biggest structural problem with this fountain.

The water overshoots the basin. The arc from the spout is actually quite elegant, sort of emphasizing the beauty of the water itself. But that isn't very useful if that arc causes these droplets to land on the ground (and you, if you're not careful.)

For aesthetics, the basin gains points for this little ridge in it, so the water has a natural path to flow into the drain. It adds to the beauty, as you watch this water flow, like watching a little stream down near your old home that has spent thousands of years to carve a path through dirt and rocks. This sort of follows a similar pattern, with some clever industrial design, reaching up above a low point in the ridge over by the warning label, to pour over into the drain á la an impromptu waterfall over a protruding rock. It's rare to see such an elegant little stream of water in a small drinking fountain.

Sadly, in drinking fountains, function will always take precedence over form, and the overshooting problem still exists. Now, this issue isn't as pronounced if your mouth is in the middle. For many fountains, I'd suggest keeping your face from the fountain until you are really used to the arc pattern, just to keep from taking a splash in the eyes. For this fountain, if you really don't want water on your jeans or sneakers, stick your face in there.

Don't get me wrong: any outdoor fountain on this campus is welcome. I might be their biggest fan, and this campus needs more of them. However, a fountain that is only open for half the school year, and really just for those walking to the restaurants or liquor shops on Vestal Avenue, isn't really useful. I applaud the effort to bring in more outdoor fountains, and would love to see them in more prominent places. But because of its relative ease of access, this might be the measuring stick that students use for outdoor fountains in general. That makes its drawbacks more noticeable, and more disappointing. And that makes it easier to overlook its beauty.
