Standing outside her door was like the moment before a car crash. He couldn’t sweat, but if he did, now would be the time. His engines were whirring. His gears were turning. He knew by the bat of her eyes and the small smile that this was what Nora wanted. This was why she brought him along to Goodneighbor then blindsided him with a, “Jenny’s there.” Jenny. Nick’s Jenny. But not really.
The worn wooden door seemed to glare at him. He could turn back now. He could stop rehearsing what he’s going to say and change his mind, but damn, he’s already here and the knob was already turning.
Sunlight slipped over his face. It slipped over her shoulders.
“Uh, hey there, Jenny,” he finally managed. “Thought I’d stop by... See how you’re coming along.”
