Thoughts on Angel/Darla dynamic in ‘The Trial’.

This episode made me understand Darla’s character so much better.

I truly believe that the moment when Angel is willing to sacrifice his life to save Darla’s in the last test of Trials inspired Darla to accept her own death. At the end of the episode she says:

‘I’ve seen how you care. The way nobody else has ever cared. Not for me.’

 Angel has always believed that every soul is worth saving. And even though he can never know if Darla will be able to live a good life and make up for all the wrong she did, he gives his life for hers. Because he believes that everyone should get a second chance.

For a century and a half those two were partners in crime. Everything she has done, he’s done it too. They spent 150 years doing unspeakable things, destroying lives and whole towns. Those times are haunting Angel, yet even though Darla is a reminder of those dark deeds they did together, the only thing he feels towards her is compassion and love.

Angel was lucky enough to get a second chance and he feels morally responsible to do whatever it takes to save her soul just like his was saved. He looks at her and sees his former self, a desperate, weak vampire, who likes to see suffering and blood, but with a great potential to do good.

At the end Darla realized she was living her second chance. Her second chance was to die just like she was supposed to die at the first place. And she accepted it. She was ready to do the right thing. That is what makes it so heart-breaking and beautiful. But what is even more heart-breaking is that Wolfram and Hart didn’t let her do the right thing.
