A flight that hijacked us for 2 hours for a worthwhile trip

No, I don’t think we are ever prepared for a forced-upon calamity. We always sidestep the thought by saying- It’s something that happens to others, not us. As long as we have done nothing wrong, we have said our prayers, we have helped elderly, nothing wrong can happen to us. We are in such carefree state that we don’t even completely listen to the instructions of the air-hostess when they are guiding us about how to use to life-jacket or the oxygen masks. We are busy fiddling away surfing/whatsapping on our very very smart phones, that become junk and useless in the air.

Those unsuspecting passengers would have had the same emotions before getting on the plane, unbeknownst of what was coming next. The movie ‘Neerja’ tells us the tale of how a young air hostess Neerja Bhanot, by using her presence of mind and not bowing down before the circumstances she was in, saves the lives of many passengers from the terrorists who hijacked the Pan-Am flight in Karachi in 1986. When you go for a movie starring Sonam Kapoor, you go with the least expectations and may be that is what worked for the movie.

The movie shows that leadership arise only when you are thrown right in the pit of an agonising situation. And not everyone can display that skill. The conquest of fear only happens when you take hold of yourself and your mind without bothering about foreseeable damage that it can do to you. Action takes place in your mind first before taking a vivid form. Most of the movie happens inside the flight and the way it is captured almost makes you feel that you are one of the hostages. You see, intuitively we imagined ourselves in the shoes of hostages and not as Neerja who took the charge and took cudgels against the terrorists. We submit to the condition by saying- hum to passenger hai, hum kya karenge? We don’t know whether turn of events in the movie happened exactly how it happened in real, but we can safely say that there was someone in the flight who elevated herself in the position of a leader and at least could think about rescuing not just oneself but other lives on that hijacked plane.

We are shown flashbacks of where Neerja might have gotten the courage to do what she did. She survived an abusive marriage, and she took charge to come out of it, rather than countless other women who just submit to their fate. She didn’t compromise- because her husband didn’t want her to pursue her first passion i.e. modelling- and resurrected her life by walking out. We also see her reluctance in starting a new life with her boyfriend played by Shekhar Ravijiani, like any other girl who has survived an abusive relationship would do. All these things show that how she was a normal human being just like us and didn’t have any special superpowers to do what she did.  Her mother played by Shabana Azmi also displays incredible restraint when she gets the news of her daughter’s death and when Neerja’s dead body is brought back. She doesn’t show any regret even when she is giving a speech and reminiscing about Neerja’s liking for superstar Rajesh Khanna on her death anniversary, and accepts the situation very humbly.

Safe to say, and much to the surprise of everyone’s expectations from a film starring Sonam Kapoor, the movie moves you and grips you till the end. It takes us in an emotional flight of bravery, determination and shows the power of great story-telling.
