“Can you tell Takaishi that there’s no practice today?”

Hikari didn’t understand why they were asking her--She had no idea who he was, but apparently no one had seen him all day. Maybe he was a boy from a different class. They looked at her so hopefully though--so expectantly--that she smiled and promised to tell him.

And then proceeded to spend the rest of the school day tracking him down.

Finally, someone pointed her out--with a strange look that suggested everyone knew who this kid was except, it seemed, her. She hurried to catch up with him in the hallway, excusing herself with an apologetic smile.

“Have your teammates caught up with you yet? They asked me to tell you that there’s no practice today, if they hadn’t found you already.”

“Of course you--” she began, but then she stopped herself. She was reminding herself, uncomfortably so, of her brother at his most stubborn. But her heart was pounding, and the pain of it made it hard to think.

“Okay. I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” she said, and she sounded breathless. The look on his face physically hurt her. She hated causing her friend so much distress. But he had to know, he was her friend. “Come over for dinner anyway--as an apology, if you’ll accept it, for the... mistake. You’ll get along with my big brother. And we’re in the same class, right?” She took a deep breath to steady herself. “We should be friends.”

She would show him. She would prove it to him. They were friends.
