Sound design for a Video game

Today I started recording all the sound effects that I will be using in a vertical slice of a game that I am making. The game is about a hunter stuck in the wilderness, whilst being hunted by a creature. So I started with footsteps....

Recording sounds for game effects is AMAZING, I love doing this so much. I’ve got about 15 sounds to create for the vertical slice which is to go for 60 seconds in total. I know there are ways to get royalty free sounds that are amazing however I wanted to push myself and do it on my own, with some help of course. 

In a day I’ve managed to get nine of the sounds down. For the first time I saw first hand how important it is to have all of your preparation work done before production starts. I had multiple mood boards and countless pictures about the kind of sounds I wanted to re-create and my level layout was complete so when it came to explaining what I was trying to accomplish to my friend who was helping me record it all, he knew exactly what felt right and what was off. 

The preparation process sped up our production time ridiculously, a lesson definitely well learnt and one that I will forever remember moving into the future.

Game Design its full all sorts of amazing things........Stepping on grass, leaves and sand, whilst on bricks to emulate walking in a forest wilderness. Gotta love it!!!

No Sound, No Impact, Why Sound Design Matters in Videos?

Some essential components of a video include lighting and camera angles, but one of the most important aspects that is often overlooked is sound, which is just as crucial as other video features. Sound includes voices that add emotions and change the complete dynamics of a video. It feels more real and interesting.

Unclouded sounds that help us to understand what is actually happening. Even a great-looking video looks less interesting and engaging than a video that is filled with sound and music. 

Sound Design: Meaning:

Sound design means adding and choosing sounds for a video, movie, or game so it feels real and interesting. These sounds include people talking, background music and small sounds like footsteps, rain, or doors closing.

For example, when someone walks, and you hear their steps, that is sound design. Music that makes you feel happy or scared is also part of sound design. Without these sounds, a video would feel boring and hard to enjoy.

Sound Design: Importance:

Only seeing scenes is not important, but also feeling them; that’s why sound design comes as an important solution to it. 

Makes scenes feel realSound design adds sounds like footsteps, rain, or wind so the scene feels real. For example, hearing rain makes a rainy scene believable.

Helps show feelingsMusic and sounds help us feel happy, sad, or scared. For example, scary music makes a horror scene feel more frightening.

Helps tell the storySounds explain things we may not see. For example, the sound tells us a storm is coming even before it appears.

Makes voices clearGood sound design helps us hear people talking clearly. For example, clear dialogue helps us understand a conversation in a busy place.

Tells us where to lookSounds guide our attention to important actions. For example, a loud bang makes us look at what just happened on screen.

Sound Design: Personalities:

Famous Personalities who helped in shaping this big industry and added a new perspective, and also gave marvellous songs and music which are still heard by us in our ears. 

Ben Burtt – He made famous sounds like the lightsaber and robot sounds in the Star Wars movies.

Walter Murch – He helped create powerful sounds and editing for famous movies like The Godfather.

Gary Rydstrom – He created realistic dinosaur sounds for the movie Jurassic Park.
