EP Review: Tim Heidecker & the Very Good Band - Audiotree Live
Hope is the last thing I hope to forget, Tim Heidecker sings, infusing the grey pessimism of “Dark Days” with the slightest bit of sunny optimism as his Audiotree Live EP comes to a close.
Recorded with his Very Good Band, the six-song, 18-minute recording finds the full-time-comedian-turned-part-time-musician musing on age-related writer’s block (“Well’s Running Dry”), killing a day, maybe more, on ’shrooms (“Trippin’ (Slippin’)”) and coming to terms with a regular-guy level of fame on “Dad of the Year.”
Though he eschews tracks from Fear of Death - the 2020 LP that still stands as his musical apex - Heidecker & the Very Good Band use this live-in-studio setting to adroitly mix country steel and rhythms with rock and folk melodies to create a wholly agreeable sampler that confirms music is more than just a hobby for the funny frontman.

EP Review: Melissa Carper - Audiotree Live
Melissa Carper needs only a quarter-hour and a trio to conjure the ghosts of country music’s early days.
Backed by guitarist Greg Harkins and fiddler Katie Shore, the bassist Carper recreated four songs from 2024’s Borned in Ya, plus “Zen Buddha” and “Texas, Texas, Texas” from ’22’s Ramblin’ Soul for her Audiotree Live EP. And whatever the songs lose in instrumentation and studio enhancement, they gain in authenticity as Carper temporarily transforms early-21st-century Chicago into mid-20-century Nashville with her blend of country, jazz and swing music delivered with a sassy twang contemplating the allure of filth on “Your Furniture’s Too Nice,” the efficacy of meditation as a cure for horniness on “Buddha” and the importance of her musical influences on “Borned in Ya.”
You gotta listen to Hank Williams ’til it’s borned in ya/you gotta listen to Leadbelly ’til it’s borned in ya/you gotta listen to Hazel Dickens ’til the soul is borned into your bones
And anyone who’s a fan of Sierra Farrell absolutely must add Caroer to that list.
