Autim and Sensitivity to Sound
The Autistic Teacher
To autistic people: what hearing protection do you use (if you use any)?
Headphones (noise-cancelling)
Earbuds (noise-cancelling)
Earplugs
Ear defenders
Can't choose just one
Don't use hearing protection (as an autistic person)
Allistic/results
I personally prefer headphones, though I have earplugs (Loop Engage and Quiet). I use the engage in situations where I still need to talk but it's still loud, but they are kind of annoying because they increase the volume of my voice in my head lol (still better than absolutely nothing though). I use the Quiets either under my headphones for extra noise reduction or instead of my headphones when I can't wear them for whatever reason. I have the Sony 1000-Xm4 headphones which I highly recommend, though they're really expensive so if you want to get them I recommend waiting for them to go on sale like I did.
im in a ranty mood so cw auditory and sensory issues with non graphic descriptions of scars
I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT
Pro tip, when your autistic friend with well above average hearing who wears earplugs 24/7 and is easily triggered by noise tells you to stop making a certain noise it's best you listen to them
Hot take if I repeatedly tell you to stop doing something that is directly affecting my well being both physically and mentally you should stop after like the 3rd time at most
Like I understand if you forget, and it's fine if you do but to just ignore my very reasonable request because you're a bit ticked off at me is a horrible thing to do
For me, as I have mentioned a few times, it's cracking joints. It will not kill you to stop cracking your knuckles i promise you.
I literally have scars behind my ears from scratching at them because all people do is crack they're joint. All joints. At times. Everyday. All day. For infinity and beyond
Everyone, for the love of God, stop cracking your joints in public places
Pro tip!
Shower with earplugs
Not even kidding;
Don't like water in your ears?
Earplugs.
Sounds (derogatory)?
Earplugs.
Showers are so much better when ears are plugged.
I can't speak for those foam plugs, but my loop earplugs are plenty effective for me
Hot tip; if you have auditory sensitivities and it's washing day, fully recommend investing in some noise dampening over-ear headphones (or in ear if you have a preference), and a couple of good audiobooks.
Sometimes the noise can leak through and clash with the book, so I have to turn it off, but the noise cancelling will still reduce the overwhelm from the washing machine.
The audiobook can help distract your mind from the irregular or loud sounds.
Also recommend white noise/ambient soundtracks if that works better.
Someone please wrap me into a tight hug & keep me safe & let me bite you please, or I will actually start screaming right this second
i forget how nice noise cancelling headphones are until I get them back
*is overstimulated*
*politely request people to stop doing overstimulated thing*
"You can't say that! That's rude!"
*removes self from room*
"Why are you always so antisocial and rude?"
*puts in headphones/ear plugs*
"Wow. Rude."
*plugs ears*
"You are so disrespectful and rude!"
