Aug 3 - happy birthday to me, the final one of my 50s. Didn't do anything different today than any other day; gamed a bit, crocheted a bit, made supper, did the dishes. Though I put a little effort into the supper, at least, and there was the Nanaimo bars I made yesterday for dessert. Which despite being too sweet I don't regret, it's not like I have them on anything like a regular basis. I think the last time I had one was > a decade ago.

First year in a while where I haven't come up with a birthday present to myself to order online. I'm good on clothing, the only physical book I wanted I already bought myself over a month ago, my computer setup isn't in need of anything new at this point in time, etc. If I think of something in the next week I'll retroactively count it.

Supper was pork tenderloin cut into medallions and tossed with a little honey and a spice rub my sister loved for pork (featuring peppercorns, allspice berries, and juniper berries, all ground up together in a mortar), allowed to marinate in that for a while, then fried. Served with sour cream mashed potatoes and minted green peas.

I love the Demeter/Mina parallel , at the beginning the captain logs are short and suspenseful while Mina's diary is long and vibrant (with a sprinkle of doubt), but today they are the opposite length but share the similar kind of dread.
