Was rereading Fausett's recommendations for selecting a mastery, and made me curious how much of it is also influenced by in-universe ivory tower academia bias; disregarding Spiders Pactbinder, would it be possible for a mage to do poorly academically in their Mastery, but still be 'naturally gifted/powerful', and Hightower would represent a more conservative/traditional(/exclusionary) view on higher education? Or is it more analogous to, real life physicists and mathematicians of any kind would automatically be better at Spirit mastery because that's a specific set of skills you train in, and being drawn to Spirit mastery as a mage is the same as how some people are better at numbers/abstract thinking than others?

I love this ask and may write up a second response to it when the story is more progressed.

Whilst there is a degree of ivory tower / academic bias in how the Masteries are presented and taught, your latter description is closest to reality. Simple magic (simple self-healing with Life, shooting fire with Matter, etc) is more intuition than study, except Spirit somewhat, but the more complex you get the more the magic system transitions to a complex academic field that really does need subject matter expertise, where each 'casting' takes time, expertise and prep. Talent still matters, but it's the difference between a prodigy and an excellent student, not a good student and a bad one. It augments the skill, rather than substitutes the need for it.

So Hightower is correct to map these magics to academic pursuits; they and other 18th to 19th century Imperial institutions (not all British ones, of course) developed Masteries as we know them today, and the pursuit of knowledge and its application to power is not something that most competent hegemonic apparatuses take lightly.

That said, they do have some blind spots; for example, that intuitive stuff can be a big deal. The classic example is combat, where intuitive magic, fast and reliable, reigns and a near-dropout with experience from the Duelling Society probably can thrash most Professors in a fight. Being fast, accurate and ruthless whilst keeping a cool head under pressure matters way more than sophisticated casting in a battle.

The system also sort of was predicated on the assumption that every mage could be allocated to a Mastery that suited them well. The Gift has always required awakening to a single magic, but this new idea that you might just not be able to awaken to some kinds of magic? That's a big issue. Imagine being a genius mathematician who hates the other sciences and art, but can't awaken to Spirit, e.g...

Another easy example of an arguable blindspot - Witches. 99% of the time, the variations in a Witch's magic are to the detriment of the Witch, often with ultimately fatal consequences. But sometimes you get lucky and your Gift looks closer to that of a normal mage. It might even be able to do things other mages can't! But given the casualty rate, this is something Hightower (as an institution, and putting aside the prejudice against Witches as individuals) is probably right to discourage. Besides, those tricks often come with their own costs.
