act i, scene i:
a rundown second floor apartment. it hasn’t been renovated since it was built 30 years prior: peeling laminate, 70’s gold appliances, the living room backed by a full wall of mirror. girl sits on the floor in front of a tiny transparent green zenith television, a model originally designed for high security prisons. an episode of csi plays on one of its three channels. in the background, the faint sound of girl in the next room talking to the devil on the telephone. august closes around the room like the sweaty hand of a teenage boy trying to reach second base. summer hangs, inexorable. this is the first night.
