In my stories, a recurring setting appears called the Station of Time Gone By. Long time ago, I noticed the heavy use of train stations as settings in a lot of media, usually to convey some form of transitional change/bring about the concepts of change to supplement the narrative. And as I live relatively close to New York City, I'm at least decently traveled to the point of being familiar with the local rail as well as the subway. At some point, I figured I wanted to use the idea of stations in my own stories, given my exposure. In The Percivals, the Station of Time Gone By is largely metaphorical. Whether entering some kind of transport station in a scene triggers entry, or one simply dreams, once a character is in the station, it becomes primarily a device to convey someone's inner monologue and conflict with themselves. When someone visits the station, it's not because they want to, but because they have to- because a part of them has been pushed explicitly to tell themselves to confront some kind of contradiction in their own psyche.
