sebastian and his brother grew up rather spoiled since their father inherited a multi million dollar hotel business from their grandfather.
from a young age his father was always encouraging seb to go into law (in case he ever needed legal help) and though it was forced upon him, it turned out he was actually pretty good at it.
when he wasn’t studying (which was a lot) he was definitely the wild child. starting fights, getting into trouble, getting wasted at parties. but the boy had money and he grades never really suffered so they let him slide.
most of the time his father was busy working and his mother would give him however much money he requested so he’d go away and not have to dealt with. though he was still required to show up to whatever hotel events, galas, or charity auctions that required strong family representation. they couldn’t been seen as less than perfect when they were all together.
his brother was the golden child and it was pretty obvious that his mother favored him. she’d increase seb’s allowance just so he’d leave the house or not bother her. she didn’t see any good in him and sebastian could always feel it.
he didn’t let it bother him, or tried to. he made the most of what he was given, never having to deal with family other than out in public gave him more time and freedom to spend on his friends and of course a hook up or two.
now he’s off at school away from his family, and though he still has access to the cash, you can bet he’s still going to live fully as his cocky charming self.
he met natalia during his freshman year, something about her just made her stand out to him. she was different than a normal hookup and for some reason he actually found himself having real conversations with her and not hating it. though they didn’t actually get together until sophomore year.

Will was born to overtly christan parents, highly religious people who constantly had him in church, had him studying the bible daily. He was raised to be as devout as they were. It was the only option for their son.
All of Will’s schooling was in private catholic schools. He hated them, he always felt different and knew he was. From a very young age he knew he wasn’t like other boys, at least in his interests. Boys were always more interesting than girls. He wanted to be around boys, he wanted to be near boys and when they started talking about girls he never found himself interested.
He made the mistake once of telling his parents when he was younger and they sent him to their priest to talk about him and tell him how wrong it was to think like that. From that moment he hid it, he hid those thoughts and refused to accept them even in himself. At that point he refused to be what he was.
He started dating girls in high school, over compensating for the thoughts he had and the ones he didn’t want to have. It was easier to pretend that he was interested in girls than to admit the truth.
His parents were proud, even prouder when he started playing football. A manly sport that made them happy. Their only issue was his grades. He wasn’t the smartest, his strengths were in sports and he liked it that way. It didn’t become an issue until he was offered an athletic scholarship to Arizona University. He was on the verge of failing but miracilously made that up.
His parents wanted him to go to a catholic university but with the scholarship they couldn’t turn it down and he was allowed to go.
Will’s first taste of freedom wasn’t as fun as he imagined it to be. he wasn’t as excited about it as he thought he would be. He was put on the spot, realzing that being drunk only made him loose and more interested in things he couldn’t have.
In his sophmore year it was the first and last time he ended up getting drunk he came onto Mateo Rodgrigez, a boy he’d been angrily attracted to for a year before. As anyone can imagine it didn’t go very well.
Will’s only been in one relationship with another man, he was in love, wanted to be with him but hated himself for it. Hated himself and as much as he wanted to be happy for once it was ruined when Mateo confronted him. He threatened to out him and after that he broke it off with the guy.
Will’s only ever been really himself around a few people. He’s always over compensating, putting on a mask. He hates hiding but he’s doing it because he feels like he has to.

growing up miles’ family was always pretty hands on and crafty. his mother was able to tell stories and get people to feel emotions based on her paintings and as a young boy he was always fascinated by it.
the boy took after his mother with drawing, but he found himself wanting more. he wanted to be able to appeal with more than just what someone could see. that paved the way for him to begin story telling with words.
his father was a musician with a degree in environmental science, he wanted a good back up plan, but he was always touring and that’s how he ended up meeting danielle, miles’ mom. (he still travels, but it’s more for work projects than tours now. his mom runs an art gallery.)

leo was born in london to two very wealthy parents, richard and cynthia van doren. richard was something of an inattentive father (particularly when it came to leo) and from early on beginning to distance himself from the family, and while cynthia certainly loved leo, she’d always wanted a daughter, which she got two years later when his little sister victoria ( @toriivd ) was born. thus, it was from an extremely young age that leo began to feel like something of a black sheep in the family. richard was, unbeknownst to any of them, already having an affair with a woman in america whom he’d met on several business trips to arizona. all they knew was that he hardly seemed invested in their family anymore, let alone to take an interest in their lives. of course, victoria was a daddy’s girl, and though she often pretended not to see this happening leo knew perfectly well she was lying deliberately to herself. it was something he only pulled out when they fought bitterly, and they both knew it was a low blow when he did.
this was especially apparent in high school, when leo’s acting out turned to drug use, skipping school, and even trouble with the police a few times. richard was almost never there either to lend fatherly support or to discipline--the only time he was, leo got the tongue-lashing of his life as well as a slap in the face, and if he had to pick a specific event which led him to the realization that he hated his father, it would be that one.
even as things were looking rockier and rockier with their parents, leo was 12 when his mom got pregnant again. 13 when she had their baby brother, bradley. it was frankly a mess and for the first couple years leo was not at all good about helping. he resented the further attention drawn away from himself and hated his dad more than ever for his seemingly endless supply of bullshit
when he was 15, tori 13, and bradley 2, their parents finally got divorced. he and tori listened in on the final, blow-out fight from the stairs and learned that the reason their father had been taking so many business trips to the states all these years was in fact another woman, and even better, the two kids he had with her. tori had processed this in her own way, and leo had tried to be there for her, but his own self-destructive method of processing it made it difficult to do so. in other ways, however, the whole thing changed the nature of his relationship with his mother, which had always been a little distant. the fact of his father’s betrayal had the effect of inspiring within leo a fierce love and protectiveness over her, and in the rubble of their family the four of them found something much more intimate than they’d had before.
he graduated high school in spite of all this but spent the following two years doing nothing productive; it was sex drugs rock n roll and rebellion, and through it all giving a huge metaphorical middle finger to his dad, who’d officially moved to arizona to pledge his allegiance to his chosen family. leo and tori eventually came to the morally questionable agreement to tell people that their father had died in a car accident rather than explain the truth, and for leo, it was as much an act of spitting on his father’s memory as it was a tactic to avoid talking about it.
it was when tori finally graduated high school that they formulated the plan to go to university in arizona, and while they were there to try and find their father. not because leo missed him, of course--it was closure he was after, and only seeing him and his other family would allow him to find it.
a year ago now, leo went back home to england for a month and a half to check himself into rehab, but the only person he told was his mom. it was for an opioid addiction that had gotten out of hand and he did indeed manage to get clean. he’s even managed to stay clean when it comes to the opioids, but he’s started doing coke now and then and dabbling in pills. mostly though it’s just a lot a lot of weed all the time.
he’s in his senior year of his bfa and has almost no prospects, although that’s mostly due to his screwing them all up by being high and careless about it. a part of him despises the whole idea of school and the work force and having a career and is lowkey self destructing bc he can’t handle the idea of growing up and having to act like an adult

ever since she was young, dancing was her life. she took part in multiple dance competitions and it made her feel free. with music, dance moves, being able to watch others, making new friends, and improving, the girl loved it all. it made her realized she wanted to be a professional dancer someday.
however, with her mom suddenly leaving her and her father, it took a toll on scarlet. she became sad for months. mostly stayed in her room, hardly talked to anyone, and barely ate. the main reason how she became lively again was because of her teachers. they convinced her to continue and at first, being hesitant, she refused, but the desire to dance was able to bring her out of bed and go back into a routine.
high school came and of course, she decided to continue working on dancing by joining classes and checking out a club or two. although, she took a pause on competitions to take more time to socialize with friends and schoolwork. by her junior year, she joined the cheer team and eventually became captain in her senior year. her popularity slowly increased and she was soon well-known, but not because of her extracurricular activities. it was from her being kind to anyone and everyone. she would talk to the lonely kids at the food court, pay for someone’s lunch if they weren’t able to, help a friend carry books to their next class, etc.
everything may have seemed like things were perfect and filled with happiness, but that wasn’t quite right. she had a boyfriend during her senior year, but he was terrible. he was manipulative and toxic. while behind the scenes of dating of him, he made her cry multiple times, blamed her for things she didn’t do, and made her feel small and insignificant. once she opened up to her parents about the situation, they helped in getting her out of the relationship.
when it came to the thought of college, scarlet wasn’t picky about where she was as long as she was able to get into a dancing program. that was one of the things that mattered. the second thing that mattered was family. going to arizona university, it allowed her to stay close to them. the third thing that swayed her options was dorian walker. he was her favorite person and she didn’t want to lose him.

Barriss got adopted by the Linderman’s fairly early, so she doesn’t know too much about her life before. The biggest thing she knows is that her bio parents were very close friends of the Linderman’s, but that’s about it. They don’t seem to want to be very talkative.
The Linderman parents are an interesting bunch: a Broadway performer (Christine in Phantom, Cinderella in Into the Woods, Ellen in Miss Saigon, Cosette in Les Mis, et cetera) and a “super geek.” It’s very easy to tell which parent each of the Linderman kids took after!
Barriss, of course, was the super geek. (It is literally in her name, after all.) Science and math came very easy to her -- she really enjoyed them, even, and actively pursued them. Even at a very young age. She occupied her time with Robotics, Science Olympiad, and basically every nerdy K-12 activity available. To add insult to injury, she was -- and is -- quite the Star Wars fan, too.
Pressures were high. Barriss wanted to be perfect... you know, just like Natalia, their biological child. Natalia, star of every school play, every musical. Natalia, Thespian Society president. Natalia, with the perfect boyfriend and life. She loved her older sister, but fuck. It didn’t feel fair.
They had a really weird relationship because of it: loving, friendly, happy, but with an imbalance of power always lurking in the subtext. Natalia tried to assuage the younger one’s fears and concerns, but it only worked superficially.
Sometime during her high school career, Barriss met someone (online, that is): Nikita Tanaka. Nikita was slightly older than her, not that it mattered too much. She liked really soft stuff, like, berry picking and fairy lights and crap. She was passionate about psychology and mental health and the wellbeing of other people... even when she was struggling herself. Nikita scared her, really. Barriss was afraid for and of how she was starting to feel about Nikita, as in... she was kinda in love with her. That wasn’t important, though. What mattered was his strict her parents were and the assholes that drugged and recorded her and made Nikita feel like any of it was her fucking fault. Oh yeah, and by the way... Barriss was really pissed off for her, too, if that wasn’t obvious.
As far as actual school, Barriss was pretty darn good at that, too. She took AP Physics, AP Calc BC, and just about every AP offered, all while remaining considerably involved in school activities. She somehow managed to graduate as valedictorian, even.
Things were going pretty well towards the end, especially with Natalia (pretty funny, you know, since her end is the one in question). Barriss would be going off to Stanford to study Physics in a few months, too.
Disaster struck not too long after. June 7th, 2017 came, and Natalia, along with the other three, disappeared. This hit Barriss particularly hard, and Stanford became an afterthought. Who cared about Stanford when your sister was probably dead?
So, she went to Arizona instead, conveniently just down the block. Barriss had to live in Natalia’s shadow, even more looming in light of June’s events... but she could stay at home for a bit, at least. Nikita ending up there eventually was also a plus... in a 100% platonic way.
Headcanons
Barriss wants to work for NASA doing astrophysics research, or something of the like, and has since middle school.
She has glow-in-the-dark stars on her ceiling.
Barriss dyes her hair a lot, but it’s most often hot pink (sometimes streaks, sometimes tips, and sometimes the whole nine yards; depends on how she’s feeling!).
She is probably a lesbian but hasn’t really come out to anyone yet (Barriss is definitely known to not be straight, though).
As much of a “super geek” as Barriss is, she has an artistic side, too, and loves to draw; she would definitely not mind working in video games/animation someday (though that perhaps qualifies as “super geek,” too) as another option.
She writes and illustrates a web comic with a humble amount of internet popularity that I will formulate the details of later!!

being the daughter of a politician, her behaviour often got herself in trouble in her school in the uk, which is why she was sent to a boarding school in america at the age of twelve. it didn’t stop her from starting fights, but it meant they weren’t publicised in the newspapers.
she still managed to get the highest grades, while thriving in her theatre programs. so at college it was no surprise that she was instantly involved in the theatre production, at one point being an understudy for the main role. it caused a bit of tension as evie presumed she deserved the part, but it all changed when natalia went missing. as they say the show must go on.
now people are still reeling from the tragedy, and taking in her fathers steps she is the student government president, being a voice of calmness in these uncertain times
