Hello. Can you do me a prompt? Or a story idea? I'm stuck. I have this apathetic character who had the ability to manipulate time. But I don't have any plot. :'( I have a dialogue though, "am I to save the world? I don't know. I don't care". But nothing else. I'm also having a hard time creating a "limit" for him. Like was he able to control time at will? But what of it? What would come out of it? I don't freaking know. Please help me. I need some ideas. T-T thanks! :D
Hi there lovely! I can absolutely try to help you out. It sucks to get stuck without a plot, so I’ll give you a few prompts and a bit of advice after, yeah? Hopefully some of it helps.
1. “Am I to save the world? I don’t know. I don’t care.”
“Well you better start caring! That’s my family out there! My friends! You may not have anyone to care about, but I do.”
2. “You could do anything, you could save anyone, but all you do is sit there, stopping and starting time as if it’s some sort of game. Well I’ve got news for you. People’s lives aren’t a game.”
3. “Why should I care about any of that? I’m dying. I won’t be here much longer.”
“Look. I’m sorry, it sucks. But right now, you’re the only person in the world I can turn to. And for once, I need you to get up and do something.”
There are multiple ways to create plot. Characters are often key to how a plot develops, so you’ve already done a good amount of work toward arriving at a plot.
Ask yourself: What does this character want? Who does he care about? Who is he, in general? He may be apathetic, but even the most apathetic people in the world have desires and/or people or things they care about. If you can figure out what/who he does care about, you can use that to incite action on his part, to make him want to save the world.
For example, what’s your character’s worse fear? Now make it ten thousand times worse and put him through it. Make it so that everything that can go wrong with his power does go wrong. Force him into a situation where he has to do something.
If that’s not enough, bring another character in. All of the prompts up there involve another character asking or demanding help. Your character won’t exist in a void. If you’re stuck with what to do with him, try thinking of another character whose goals/ideas incite plot, or who forces your character to do something he normally wouldn’t do.
You absolutely need to give him weaknesses, but it can be a little tricky to figure out how. Limits can be physical, psychological, emotional or conditional (based on the power).
Physical: Say every time he messes with time, he’s frozen in place for a minute. Or he gets really, really tired. Or he ages from the amount of time he messes with (so if he stops time for a minute, he ages an hour).
Treat his power like a physical activity. If I run for twenty minutes, I’m going to be tired and out of breath. Maybe the same happens if he messes with time. This also may mean that if he practices then he can endure more and more, just like if I run every day then it tires me out less and less.
Psychological: This can be something like seeing “time ghosts”. Maybe the more he messes with time, the more he sees the different choices people can make and thus the “ghosts” of how those choices play out. This can be super unnerving, and may make him not want to mess with time very much. Whatever the case, if you go with this route, you have to consider carefully how this impacts his mental health and how it affects when and why he decides to use his powers.
Emotional: Maybe every time he messes with time, he hurts or even kills someone. Not necessarily because that’s how his power goes, but because he makes a decision that ends up making a situation worse. Time is tricky to write about, but it’s highly likely that someone traipsing about messing with it is gonna hurt someone somewhere. Show us how he deals with that, how it holds him back. This might be another way to make him care about others and incite plot. Or it might show why he’s apathetic in the first place.
Conditional: Conditional limits would be something like he can’t stop time for more than a minute, or that every time he changes something with his powers, someone gets hurt from it. This can, of course, blur with the options above, and you should definitely show how he is physically, psychologically, or emotionally affected by the conditions of his power.
I would pick at least two of the categories I listed above, if not more, to limit his power. This adds layers of complexity to his ability and gives you a lot to work with.
Once you find limits and outline more of your character, I think a plot idea might come to you. If you’d like me to expand on one of the prompts or list some plot masterposts, let me know! I know there are a few blogs I follow that have written more on the subject.
