"I don’t quite know how to say how I feel."
The air between them trembled with untouched feelings, fingers clenching into fists at his side in an effort to fight the growing need to touch her. Her face, her hair … every inch was an invitation for smooth caresses and it was with a clenching of his jaw that David stepped back, opening the distance between them as if in an effort to resume control. Rain fell in droplets, water gathering along the hair that clung to his forehead only drop in beads off the tip of his nose. A rivulet coursed down his cheek - tears or simply a reminder of the weather, he wasn’t sure which.
All of his life he had watched the woman in front of him, all of his life he had fought the urge to call her his own. Friends for life, that’s what they had promised so long ago … and David Nolan would never presume to give that up. “Ruby…” Her name was hoarse among his lips, tongue sweeping out over dry cracks as words stumbled over themselves. Excuses were there, locked behind clenched teeth lest he ruin the moment for good … and suddenly he was stepping forward, fingers closing the distance between them to hold the woman’s chin.
“Ruby.” Softer this time, tone laced with comfort and understanding as he moved close still, lips suddenly finding hers in a bruising kiss. Maybe he had read the signs wrong, maybe this was nothing more than a futile wish - but as the rain fell in curtains around them, sudden sheets enveloping them with a steady caress, David found he didn’t care. Let him be wrong, let the dynamic between them suddenly shift … he was done being the coward, done with ignoring something as perfect as this. Finally finding the courage to break away, blue eyes blinking against the sheen, the older man smiled, fingers instinctively wrapping around the younger woman’s own. “Is that a good start?”
