Area in Mount Vernon used to be known as Auto Row

Bruce Bodie, the co-owner of City Café, a restaurant in Mount Vernon at Cathedral and Eager streets, asked about the former use of his building and sent along an early photo of it that he said he was given 20 years ago. In the 1970s, it was a popular disco, Gerard’s. But the structure was built as an automobile sales agency in the era when the upper part of the Mount Vernon neighborhood had numerous sales and auto servicing businesses. His building, at 1001 Cathedral St., was once a Chandler and Cleveland agency. The owners were Hugo Block and Leander Funk. The Baltimore Sun referred to Cathedral Street and adjoining streets as Auto Row.

In July 1930, The Sun reported that William D. Stevens, of the Stevens Motor Co., a Ford dealership, had purchased 1001 Cathedral. It later became Bittorf Ford.

It had competition.

Weil and Scott, another dealer, was one block north. Packards were sold at the Zell Motor Car Co. on Mount Royal Avenue, beween St. Paul and Charles streets. Kelly Buick was across Mount Royal Avenue and is now a University of Baltimore building. Weiss Motors, another Ford agency, was at 31 W. Mount Royal. City Chevrolet was also on West Mount Royal.
