60 years ago... automatic watch & 8 days in a garbage can ! August 1965, the motto of the Gemini V mission was “ Eight Days or Bust!” After an aborted launch on August 19, the Gemini V astronauts performed 7 days 23 hours in space between August 21 and 29. Besides their NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster wrist watch chronographs (Conrad wore two), the astronauts also wore a personal watch: Cooper wore a battery-powered tuning fork movement Accutron Astronaut GMT pilot watch which he had worn during Faith-7 (May 1963) and Conrad wore a Glycine Airman automatic pilot watch, which he also wore during Gemini XI, making it both the first automatic wrist watch in space on Gemini V, and the first automatic wrist watch directly exposed to outer space during the EVAs of Richard Gordon. During a meeting with the Voshod II cosmonauts in Athens -Greece, Cooper gifted an Accutron Astronaut to Pavel Belyayev, although it's not clear if that was his Faith 7 & Gemini V space-flown watch. USAF Colonel Gordo Cooper became backup astronaut for Apollo 10 but was replaced so he decided to leave NASA in 1970. Iniitially Charles Conrad was Apollo 8 backup but due to changing crew assignments and a 1968 mission swap, Charles Conrad went on to become Apollo 12 commander but could have been the first man to walk on the Moon if crew assignments didn't change! In 1973, Conrad flew 24 days onboard the Skylab SL-2 space station before retirement from NASA & US Navy in September 1973. (Photos: NASA/MoonwatchUniverse)

Roger and my watch
Roger is one of the few remaining horologists in Canberra. He and I have been friends for over 40 years. This is the last watch of mine he worked on. A Japanese Wittnauer 2000. Built in 1970 for the 1971 market and still going strong thanks to Roger.
