I chose these images because I was drawn to the way Rachel Morrison created the lighting for night scenes in Mudbound. Rather than attempt to create lighting that reveals every aspect of the room shown, and the features of the characters in the scene, Morrison chose more subtle lighting arrangements that mimic the lighting of this time for homes without electricity, or more contemporary fluorescent lighting.  

In the second screenshot Laura is seen in her family home playing the piano, only two lamps appear to light the room and Laura’s face falls into shadow, which I found to be an especially beautiful and peculiar choice, since the focus at this moment is primarily on her and her soon to be husband.

 In the last screenshot Ronsel Jackson arrives home and the interior of his family’s house appears to be lit by gas lamps exclusively. Shadows are especially dark in this scene, as the details of the corners of the room fall into blackness. The faces of each family member are lost unless near to lamp light. I questioned whether or not this was an effective use of the light but also enjoyed the dramatic quality of it.
