Could I get a User Aesthetic please? :) Some things I like would be: leather jackets, rain, castle ruins, d&d (so any rogue-ish stuff), martial arts, burgundy red lipstick, nighttime, video games, dark clothes, favourite colours dark red and dark blue, quotes: dangerous to my enemies, loyal to my friends (Euripides), " In a fight, they’re lethal. Okay that belt bag you made looks fantastic (I'm probably low-key channeling my d&d rogue here but yeah it does), how do you make sth like that? I mean where did you learn to make such things? :) (also, completely unrelated, your writing is great just wanted to let ya know carry on)

oh gosh thanks!!! i’m making a rogue costume using that belt bag actually, so I FEEL U. :D 

the short answer is “trial and error” haha. the long answer is “A LOT OF TRIAL AND ERROR and also friends with disposable income to buy tools.” i’ve been doing a lot of leatherworking over the past year in preparation for going as an adventuring party to gen con this august! so some of my skill is influenced by that – my bracers don’t look nearly as polished as the belt and bag, because i’ve slowly learned about different techniques, about saddle soap (bless its little boots), and about how to tool stuff properly. but yeah, a lot of it is “my friends got into it and i drew out what i wanted, then learned haphazardly how to do what i wanted to do and adjusted along the way.” which isn’t super helpful, but it’s actually more accessible than you’d think as long as you have the disposable income or can mooch off your friends like i do! and if you’re kind of flexible with your design and willing to do stuff over on occasion, you’re set. i also have a pinterest for inspiration and a lot of my stuff comes from “hey that looks cool can i do that?” and kind of jury-rigging something to work, or finding actual patterns to use on occasion. (this is how the belt bag was born.)

i also get a decent amount of use out of online tutorials – there are loads between tandy’s official stuff and youtube in general, there are SO many people doing leatherworking – but a lot of my experience is mildly haphazard googling to learn new techniques haha. that and making sure i make foam patterns before i actually cut any leather. making foam patterns has saved my ass a LOT. also, measuring carefully, which i occasionally fail to do. fully 90% of my leatherworking skill has been learned by fucking up real bad and having to start over…

iiiii don’t know if this was actually helpful haha. i’d be down to do a step by step if you like! i fully intend to make another cylindrical bag at some point for my bike, but i don’t want to start it until after the rush for gen con since it’s ALTOGETHER TOO CLOSE, so i’d probably just draw out a tutorial if you’re interested. i also fully intend to take better and more comprehensive photos of my updated vambraces and the current state of my chainmail and there’s so many more projects in the wings before the con hahaaaa i’m dying squirtle
