roxas  pauses  at that  ,  mouth drawn into a tight line.  he doesn’t look at axel  ,  he knows if he does  ,  his resolve will  crumble  ,  &  he  needs  to do this.  he has to.  roxas can’t let her last wish go unfulfilled.

kingdom hearts...set them free.

his grip on his keyblades tightens  ,  knuckles pale behind his gloves.  if he did this  ,  would they still be friends ??  was it easier to admit the truth  ,  make himself axel’s enemy  ,  or lie  ,  make perhaps the last words he ever says to him  false  ??

as terrible as it is  ,  roxas could never bring himself to  really  hurt axel.  a hollow part in his chest  aches  at the thought of it.  with his back turned  ,  no  smile  on his face or in his words  ,  he speaks.

‘ ...of course we are. ’

roxas gives a half-hearted  shrug  at that  ,  not breaking his gaze from the sky.  truth be told  ,  he wasn’t  entirely  sure what axel meant  ,  but he could piece together  a  meaning  ,  perhaps not the one intended.

life is  hard  ,  sure  ,  but not everything is bad.

&  the stars....the stars are  pretty  ,  he thinks  ,  finally looking over to axel when he thinks to speak  ,  breaking into a grin.

‘ y’know, i get what you’re saying.  but since when are you so poetic ?? ’ 

he nudges the redhead’s shoulder with his own lightly  ,  grin falling into a slight smile  ,  something more  genuine  .

maybe he was right.  sometimes  ,  not everything was bad.

but they can’t stay here  ,  roxas knows that much.  he’s never had this much freedom  ,  this much  choice  ,about where he went  &  what he did.  slowly  ,  carefully  ,  he reaches out  ,  hesitating just before he takes axel’s hand.  he curls his fingers around axel’s lightly  ,  looking forward  ,  a little unsure.  but with this  ,  an  anchor  ,  he feels better.

he feels  safer  .

‘ anywhere.  everywhere. ’ 

a small smile crawls across roxas’ face  ,  &  he finally lifts his head to look at axel when he speaks  ,  squeezing his hand. 

‘ you pick the first place. ’

for a second  ,  roxas  really  thinks he’s hearing things  ,  &  maybe  ,  quite possibly  ,  that axel’s finally gone  &  lost his marbles.  he  blinks  ,  &  nearly drops his ice cream once it sets in that  no  ,  axel actually said that  ,  he’s not crazy  ,  &  that no  ,  he’s not dreaming.

‘ well...you’d have to be the one kissing me.  you’re too tall for me to reach you. ’ 

it’s a brief quip as roxas turns to face axel more  ,  &  if he thinks roxas is  blushing  ,  roxas himself isn’t going to say anything on that.  instead  ,  his free hand sits against the edge of the clock tower  ,  balancing as he leans forward  just  a little bit.

‘ so....are you gonna kiss me or not ?? ’

Roxas shook his head, pushing the redhead out of harm’s way, and yelled: I”ll be fine! Just... Get out of here!” He summoned his Keyblade, but was too late as the giant Heartless charged, and attacked him. The blond flew back, landing hard on the ground a few feet away, the air knocked from his lungs.
