Today, in "chemists' affronts directly to God", we have tetrazidomethane and hexazidosilicate.

Azide is a super super sensitive explosive ion. Having one of them means it'll explode if you breathe on it wrong. Fully knowing this, someone decided, "hey, what if we crammed four of them really, really close together." To which the next person said "hey, thats fun and all, but what if we cram SIX of them together around a barely larger atom", and presumably somehow still has most of their fingers.

Its one of those things thats not too impressive if youre not a chemist, and absolutely mind-blowing (heh) if you are.

I think this stuff will blow your hand off diluted ten thousand times. And its not just that it exists thats impressive; sure, in theory all kinds of crazy shit exists. Its that someone ACTUALLY sat down to make it.

What kind of incredibly brave (or incredibly stupid) person decided azides needed more azide than Blue Öyster Cult needed cowbell? How did they get the money? What research board said "you know, we're going to fund you making something so explosive that the guy coughing in the next room over would send glass flying everywhere"?

I would like to shake their hand, if it's still there.
