Aug 18, 1945, three days after Japan’s official surrender. A pair of B-32 Dominators flew a photo-reconnaissance flight over Japan. Despite the official end of hostilities, the B-32s were intercepted by about 15 Japanese fighters. One B-32 was-….

2/2: -severely damaged and two US Army photographers on board were badly wounded. One of them, 20-yr-old Sgt Anthony J. Marchione, died of his injuries before the aircraft made it back to its base on Okinawa. Marchione was officially the final US combat fatality of WW2.
