Regrann from @negus_negusti - On November 24, 1865, the Black Codes of Mississippi were passed. Mississippi was the first state to pass such laws, and, eventually all Southern states would pass similar laws. The laws were Southern states efforts to return newly freed slaves to a condition as close to slavery as possible. Included in the new laws were the mandate that all "Black" people must sign labor contracts or face imprisonment, children who were orphaned or whose parents could not care for them were “apprenticed” to a white employer– males until age 21, and females until age 18. The children’s former owners were given preference as to who the children were apprenticed to. The children were also allowed be physically punished. If anyone “ran away” from an employer, they were arrested and returned. Because the 13th Amendment had just outlawed slavery and involuntary servitude, except for punishment of a crime, many seemingly innocuous acts suddenly became “crimes”. Some of the offenses that became crimes were things such as juggling, preaching without a license, misspending one’s earnings, night walking, idleness, and insulting gestures. Added to the law was the ability of law enforcement to “hire-out” prisoners who could not pay their fines to white employers who paid the fines 🤔 in other words, revamped slavery. #AmeriKKKanHistory #BabylonTricks #TeachTheBabiesTheTruth #YouGoneGetDisWork - #regrann
