Q&A about hitchhiking

Q: Is hitchhiking for me?

A: To answer this you must first ask yourself some questions. Firstly, are you physically fit enough to do this, or willing to get physically fit? Lugging around your pack, which will probably weight between 25-75 lbs, all day isn't easy work, and we shouldn't pretend for it to be. Secondly, are you doing this just as a method of transport, just for an adventure, or both? If you are doing it just as a mode of transportation, the long hours will seem grueling, and it will be hard to get yourself motivated enough to get on the highway some mornings, and should maybe only be kept in mind for day trips. If you're only doing it for the adventure, it can work out amazingly, but those first couple trips might be hard if you're not going anywhere in particular. A good balance of both is recommended for the first trip or two, unless you're really stoked and prepared to hitchhike, or really need to get somewhere. Lastly, are you okay with maybe sleeping outside, not necessarily eating full meals every day and not showering lots? Yes? Then take your backpack to the highway! And alright, I know we just made hitchhiking sound like a bit of a giant ass pain, and it's not necessarily, but it's also not for everyone. We find it super fun and rewarding despite the ass pain-y bits, some people just can't look past them. Before trying a coast-to-coast trip, which is our focus here, try a few smaller ones, make sure this is something you can do. Or at least bring enough money to get yourself out of this situation if you fucking hate it.

Q: Should I hitchhike in the winter?

A: Are you an experienced traveler with good winter gear, places to stay or money for motels, have a back up plan and good warm water proof boots? Yes? Then maybe. But if you answered no to any of those, no. Or at least nothing more then a two or three day trip. Don't want you dying on us.   

Q: Should I use a sign, and if so, what should I put on it?

A: Now there's pretty mixed opinions on this, both in our group and on the internet, but I'm the one with the laptop right now and I give this a very strong 'YES'.  (For full disclosure, reason's behind not wanting to use one include: less likelihood of short distance rides, harder to get out of if you feel sketched out and some crap about the wind. The general consensus though is, you don't have to use one, but you can if you like.) As you travel more you'll find your preference. I like using a big piece of cardboard with a simple one word direction on it, written super bold. (East or West or North or whatever, you get the idea.) This, IMO is the best unless you're just trying to get somewhere in the province, or have got to the province you want to be in but aren't going to the main city. (Ex, you're in BC but going to Prince George, not Vancouver.) It's short and easy to read from the highway, doesn't require making a new sign every time you arrive in a place you want to stay a few nights in and allows you to stay in a ride either as long as the driver allows or to get out when you don't feel safe. ("Oh, here's the exit to Oromocto, I'm going here to visit family for the week. Thanks") Signs that say things like 'Showered today' work well at onramps and truck stops, but don't bother lying on them. Whoever pics you up will now if you're lying and just get pissed.

Q. Alone? With friends? Two people, three people? How should I hitchike?

A: The answer to this one is actually pretty simple, however you feel comfortable! To go a bit more in depth,some people swear that you should not hitchhike alone, but I actually enjoy it a fair amount and sometimes feel safer by myself. Traveling with someone though has lots of benefits, getting to distribute heavier gear like a tent if you choose to bring one, it's generally more fun, commonly considered safer and there's the added perk of being able to take turns in the back seat of vehicles so one of you can actually sleep. A two person team of one male bodied person and one female bodied person looks like a couple, so gets rides the fastest, with two male bodied people getting rides the slowest out of groups of one to two people.  Difficulty increases with three people, and four or more is almost impossible. 

Q: How long does it take to cross Canada hitchhiking?

A: In my experience Halifax-Vancouver without stops takes about a week to a week and a half and Vancouver-Halifax without stops about a week and a half to two weeks. Stopping in cities will increase this time more then stopping in towns will, as cities are a pain in the ass to get out of. 

Q: Where shouldn't I hitchhike?

A: Sometimes you will see signs that look like this- 

It's generally recommended not to hitchhike there. The 400 series highways in Ontario are both dangerous and carry heavy tickets if you get picked up by police, and highway patrol in Quebec can be shit heads, so stick to on ramps in these areas. You may also see signs that look like this-

  You can actually hitchhike here, it may just take longer to get a ride. Generally speaking, use common sense. The six lane highways coming out of Vancouver are dangerous and hard to pull over, so stick to on ramps, and in a city is just dumb, take transit as far out of town as you can and then walk. (To get east going out of Toronto, take the Go-Train to Oshawa.) Avoid Wawa and other places in Northern Ontario at all costs if at all possible.
