HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN, AND RATHER often too at that, been told loosen up and learn to have fun and gain hobbies of his own. in this STAGNANT city, there's genuinely no other pathway for him but to grow. makoto wouldn't want him to lean over the books day in and say out for all eternity, and mondo would certainly ensure his disappointment if he saw kiyotaka EXHAUSTED over his education.
and he hasn't forgotten the continued teasing from badou.
