Notes from the Underground
There’s two ways to get to just about anywhere. The first, the kind that most people did, muscling their way from point A to point B through matter and space. A matter of force, momentum, trajectory, physics. The second, the kind of teleportation, folding space over like an accordion until A and B were one and the same. Much harder to pull off, much more dangerous.
But then there was the third, somewhere between the two. And this third way was simply a matter of walking outside of A and into B. Walking, down and through the surface to wherever was needed, or back up to somewhere else. It was for this that Sylvester so accurately named Walker. And it was this that let them meander, very slowly with a few appetizer stops just below the surface of limbo, down into the place known as the Underground.
It was cold. Colder than the crisp October where they came from. Steam bloomed from their nostrils into the dark air like cream into ink, all silent save for the shallow breath. Finally. Finally someplace they could see clearly, eye no longer straining against the sharp burnt-out brightness of Sylvester’s reality, instead letting them see objects with gentle clarity, snow on trees, a dark gently luminous sky above. No moon. That was good. They sighed, white beacon eye shutting gently against the background of a dense, soft black figure. Perhaps they should’ve let the skeleton monster know they were coming, but. Well. Fuck it.
A shifting movement in the snow caught their attention like the flip of a switch, and they lunged, snapping at a mouse in the undergrowth with jaws longer than they were seconds before. One flick into the air and they swallowed it whole, and that was that, sitting back a little to drink in the beautifully quiet night a few moments more.
