Killer Whale update (From Andy (Im assuming Andy Foote)

Just to update you on the killer whale stranding we necropsied last week on North Uist. Thanks to Jac and co for locating it, and John for agreeing to a 6am start to move the carcase out of the surf, we were able to undertake a full necropsy and reserve the skeleton for eventual collection by the museum.

The male wasn't in great body condition and hadn't recently fed. We found some marine debris in the first stomach, and whist obviously not helping, this thankfully didn't seem to have directly damaged the stomach. Attached some photos, in particular the asymmetric tooth wear. This could be due to this animal's possible feeding strategy of suction feeding smallish fish, eg mackerel or herring. We should know more about the population this is from once these photos have been cross checked with photo ID collections.

Possible Last Alive Sighting of Orca Found of Baleshare Beach 28/07/2014 Using the HDWT recent sightings table  we noticed a group of 12 Orca spotted north of the beach on the 08/07. Hitting google we realised the spotters was actually a sea tours company (Sea Trek) and on board? Lots of guests with cameras. There facebook we found next contained the picture of the orca photographed above along with photos visitors shared with the rest of the pod. Is this really him? Its unknown- but the dorsals quite the match. Dorsal had to be flipped but was otherwise not altered form the original image. please note this is not fact but a theory by this blog and its owners.

How do you feel about this death ?

Still pretty torn up about it, I mean its been 5 days now since he was found but I’ve been researching pretty hard ever since and actually his death has led to a lot of discoveries about both pods native to the UK so far so there is that. Just really aggravating that so far no new news has come out as to ID/cause of death (I mean we think we have an ID on him/his last known photo (see scottish-orca in a few hours)) but no necropsy results yet is getting dragging. We know there was a lot of marine waste in his stomach which means more than likely humans being lazy was a major factor in this little ones death, I mean he was only 6m and he had silage wrap in him? silage wrap?? so still 50000% done with humanity…. and foote.
