Lost in Riga - part 2

It’s December, two weeks before Christmas and I’m waiting to cross the road. A huddle of people gather around me, all of us watching the green digits of the countdown waiting for it to reach 00 so we can cross.

Winter has been upon us for but a week or so. The temperature has turned from an Autumnal positive to a Wintery negative driven by a chilling Baltic breeze. I’m wrapped in a long grey coat - a left over from my office worker days and a thick jumper, a secret hope lies within me that this will be enough for the next few months, but I know it won’t.

The group that surrounds me is a mixture of Riga’s population, withered old women who seem to be made of fossilized wood, beautiful straight backed girls, men in leather coats with shaved heads, hipsters dressed like ASOS catalogue models with twirled moustaches like Salvador Dali and the occasional cold looking tourist. They surround me, sheltering me from the chilling wind.

Out of the corner of my eye I can see the ubiquitous beggar. A shattered man in a wheelchair with hands outstretched imploringly. I cannot see his face, but his shoulders are large and well rounded, whilst his legs end before the knees, trousers tied in knots so as not to expose the flesh. At every main junction and each subway tunnel you will see the same sight, a different wound, a different posture, but all imploring and heart breaking.

He’s not dressed for the cold just a thin red jacket covers his upper body; his head sports a baseball cap – grubby and stained. His hands clutch a coffee cup which contains a few centimes.

In the few seconds before the countdown hits its end point I turn my head slightly to take in more detail. Underneath his wheel chair a drop of liquid spatters onto the floor, followed by a gentle stream, his trousers blossom a dark patch whilst the ground beneath moistens as a puddle forms. He does not shift his position. His hands do not shake and the coffee cup remains stoically outstretched. His eyes never leave the ground beneath our feet. He never makes eye contact with those that stand before him.

The crowd surges forward and I follow, my gaze dragged away to concentrate on trying not to bump into anyone, avoiding the equal sized group crossing towards us at an impatient pace. We merge like two shoals of fish, slipping between each other without thought or error.
