“LOVE”

The LOVE hands as silhouettes mean the hands can be anybody’s—man or woman, black or white, gay or straight. . . Love is for all these people. —M.O.

Owen’s work is found in galleries and streets across the country but he is perhaps best known for his efforts to unite his community of Baltimore. Motivated to connect the diverse peoples of Baltimore, he created a design of four hands spelling “LOVE” and initiated the Baltimore Love Project, painting the hands on 20 walls spread evenly around all parts of the city. In the wake of the 2015 death of Freddie Gray the walls continue to provide a source of hope and inspiration. In 2016 following the senseless shooting of 49 people in Orlando’s gay nightclub, Pulse, Owen was asked to return to the city where he attended high school. Looking across Orange Ave. at Pulse and watching people continue to visit the haunting memorials lining the sidewalk, Owen added 49 orange blossoms to his iconic Baltimore design while himself still trying to process the tragedy. @michaelowenart  @baltimoreloveproject  @pulseorlando  @scenesfromthesidewalk
