I hate Star Wars because Han Solo's fake ex-wife's great great great grandma('s relative?) was in the messiest relationship with the leader of the most fearsome group of pirates in the galaxy arguably but that's not the point because this great grandma('s relative?)'s daughter was studying crystals as a kid before she went missing and stole the kyber crystal of this blonde jedi padawan she was good friends with whose master was a 17 year old jedi knight whose former master became in charge of this space station the pirate leader from earlier destroyed later the aftermath of which led to Yoda returning from his sabbatical with this 150+ something years old (human) jedi-ish who's been through the horrors of the force being eaten from him and had terrifying visions and kinda turned to the dark side while his wookie jedi friend watched in horror and later the wookie jedi settled on this planet with these super cute bird guys that were aided by the wookie jedi's former padawan and her padawan at some point before the pirates took down the space station and around this time there was this jedi that arrived on the bird guys' planet who had a cool ass hat and knew this pirate queen who lived far beyond all those people i mentioned and had this castle where eventually Luke Skywalker's first lightsaber ended up but none of that was a part George Lucas' original vision:(

Have you ever read one of those fics that's just a blorbo going through horrific abuse for ~20k words and then they get saved by their new friend group and adopted by the fandom father figure?

I have (I used to read them chronically in middle school and I still do sometimes, I'm a sucker for extreme hurt/comfort) and I read one in particular, and it got me thinking about the differences of how published fiction and fan fiction are written. Like published books have really tight plots & stories typically, with events leading to climaxes and every character changes by the end of the story, But in fan-fiction of novel length it's usually just the author vomiting out all of the fun scenarios for their faves that they had in their head, and it's very rare for them to follow any sort of conventional story structure, so that leads to some of the characters becoming these cardboard cutouts to deliver pain to the main character.

In this one particular story I read the plot was very classic 'boy is rescued from abusive home by friend-group and teacher' and the parents he was rescued from were so comically abusive and nasty to him, it became an almost meta-narrative where I could see these horrible people through the eyes of their traumatized child reproducing it into their fic. The parents were written so that whenever the main character would walk into a room they would automatically barrage him with insults and rough him up like they were enemy npcs monsters in a video game that attack you as soon as you go near them. Like the author was so obviously a teenager who wasn't able to process that there parents had motivations and emotions and an inner world that it was plainly visible in the text by how one-dimensional the parents in the fic were. Not to say that they needed a redemption arc or that they weren't actually that heinous in real life, just that those fics are so close to the authors diary that even thought it was written in 3rd person you never even get a hint of characterization for the mom & dad.

And it's so typical for fics to just be meandering light character vignettes (which isn't a diss) that it feels really weird to write a fic where stuff actually happens. Which is totally the only reason why I haven't posted the second chapter yet. Totally.
