some important oasis math to consider:
the first oasis album definitely maybe was released 29 august 1994.
and they split 28 august 2009.
that’s just 1 day shy of 15 years that oasis was an active band with an album on the shelves.
(if you count it from their first single release, they were together for 15 years 4 months as an active band. and if you count since the start of the band in 1991, it’s 18 years. but we're using the first album metric so stick with me here.)
in the runup to the definitely maybe 30th anniversary, another looming milestone was discussed among fans: that on 28 august, oasis would officially be disbanded for longer than they were an active band with an album on the shelves. a somber moment for fans to consider.
however the reunion announcement happened 1 day before the 15th anniversary of the band split on 28 august 2009. so the official time oasis has been disbanded is just short of 15 years. by 1 day.
the time oasis is together as an active band with an album on the shelves: just shy of 15 years by ~1 day.
the time oasis is split up: also just shy of 15 years by ~1 day.
so we have to go down to the hours here to complete the comparison. this gets a bit complicated, so i'm checking my work with timeanddate.com's duration calculator.
looking at it by hour, the reunion announcement was 8 am gmt. the split was after a fight just before the paris gig (rock en seine 2009). from this schedule of the festival, oasis was set to go on at 22:00 (or 10 pm) paris time:
reports say bloc party announced the fight/cancellation onstage just moments before oasis was set to go onstage. noel announces the end of the band via oasisinet statement 2 hours later, so let's say the split is official a few minutes before midnight. paris is ahead an hour from gmt, so let's use 22:55 or 10:55 pm. this means the split would have reached 15 years on the night of august 28; 1 day shy of that exactly would be the night of august 27. by announcing the reunion in the morning instead, it's about 9 hours less than 2 days shy of 15 years.
here's the entire length of time between the split and the reunion announcement:
to compare with definitely maybe release to the band split, i need the opening hours of record stores in 94. i'm not quite sure about that. going from current shop hours, it’s definitely by noon; but record shops aren't what they once where either. maybe a big store like virgin megastore was open by 8am in 1994 for new releases. i’m not quite sure. using 8 am makes it longer and using noon makes it shorter but not by enough to change the outcome. let’s just use 8 am for an easy comparison. by this metric, the band would have made it to 15 years from definitely maybe's release on 29 august 2009 at 8am. by splitting at just before midnight 28 august, they missed that milestone by 9 hours or so. much less than 1 day shy of 15 years.
here's the entire length of time from the first album release to the split:
by announcing a reunion on 27 august 8am, oasis just barely makes it so the time they have been disbanded doesn’t surpass the time they were a fully active band selling a full LP of music.
let me repeat that:
the length of time oasis was together as an active band with an album on the shelves is officially greater than the length of the time they spent split apart.
by a bit longer than a 1 day.
about 30 hours to be exact.
unreal.
cataloging post oasis split goodbye songs…
stranded on the wrong beach (to the tune of hit the road jack): so long see you in the next one…i say so long baby buh-bye (closes on waves crashing on the shore)
man of misery: they say the kid's alright, he’s got a ticket to ride, one thing for sure, you leave me wanting more, bye bye (next 2 minutes of bye byes until screaming)
a dream is all i need to get by: now the dream is over the day is done say buh-bye say buh-bye say buh-bye
the first two may exist in some form before the split as there’s evidence of oasis era demos. the last one isn’t released til 2019 but from this one could conclude it’s from the 2009-2011 time and remained unused. meaning noel would have written two goodbye songs.
is this a case of brain share? or are they talking to each other? a man of misery is already around by 2009 and may exist since 2005. but it’s hard to say whether it had the buh-bye portion this early without hearing the demo. i can’t find a date for a dream is all i need to get by. so it is possible it’s leftover from the holmes era maybe something rejected for the moon album or that he started at home not in the studio. in this case it would represent a different break.
could this be a case of each pulling from a similar influence? the real people’s i can’t wait is on their first 1991 album which they would have played on tour with the inspirals in 92 when noel was still roadie. it’s got a don’t look back theme, mentions a world that’s been and gone, and ends on a series of buh-byes. all things that check the noel songwriting boxes. but less so for liam’s.
a fourth one is don't stop...
bye bye my friend i'm leaving i'm gonna feast on the stars in the sky and while i'm gone don't stop dreaming and don't be sad and don't cry
a 2009 oasis soundcheck of the song shows it was around presplit and it strikes a much different tone than the other three. more uplifting and complimentary than the others. perhaps from another goodbye that did not feel as angry and final. so i feel confident not including it with the three songs above.
honorable mention:
the beat goes on: no byes in this one but the same goodbye meaning. it’s my favorite to return to since reunion news for the vision of the future.
so long so long someday all the world will sing my our song
16797 I still can't believe that Jeremy left Paramore again. & I'm pretty sure they said he's never coming back, which sucks because he is/was my favorite member.
16792 @16736 What I heard, it was for more than one reason. First of all, it really didn’t work out anymore and in her last year they barely even talked. Second, Tarja threatened that she could leave the band every day, and I believe that this wasn’t the best circumstances to record another album with her.
16789 In response to 16763 – Tarja agreed to make one more album with the band before she was going to leave. But the band members, in particular Tuomas, was tired of her making comments saying she “didn’t really need Nightwish anymore”. So they did one last concert with her, which you can buy on DVD and its called “End Of An Era”, and then they handed her an open letter after the show. I guess they couldn’t handle her long enough to make another album. Haha. I like all 3 of the singers in their own respects. I personally think Tarja has the most unique voice, but Floor is probably the most versatile. And Annette I think has an angelic voice that went good with Nightwish’s sound. I embrace line up changes, it can make things more interesting. Anyway, I hope that helps haha
16765 I’m bummed that Marianne left Katzenjammer. She was, in my opinion, definitely the most talented member of that band.
16763 I’m new to Nightwish and I’m just finding out about all of the past drama with Tarja and I have one question: If Tarja was already going to leave the band, why did Tuomas and the guys fire her before she could leave? Is it because they didn’t want to wait for her to leave or did Tuomas want to demonstrate his power in the band by pulling the whole “you can’t quit because you’re fired!” thing? I don’t understand completely, so any comments or opinions on the matter would help, thanks!
