An example of how the world makes us monsters unwilling – you, too young, and them looming over you cackling, then on the floor, unmoving. You remember little of what happened, only that it did, only that the screams of your nightmares have haunted you for years afterwards – murderer murderer murderer. It might have been a saving, might have been a damning – you aren’t sure yet, haven’t quite decided which it is – only that she found you before the cops and offered you a deal: your life for the one you took, now to be indebted to her. There was no asking of why, no questioning of whatever she was to have you do; agreements shook upon with palms stained red, sticky-wet. Too many years since and you wonder still if she has saved you or has condemned you to be what the echoes remind you of on darker nights.
