Summoner Icons for Bandle Tale: A League of Legends Story
Hey ya'll this is my piece for the Farewell Riot Forge Zine that was organized on Twitter. I was assigned to draw for Bandle Tale so I drew my two favorite yordles in one of the locations of the game 🧙♂️🧚♀️
I know I'm not the only one who finished the game at the speed of light just to find Veigar 😤.
I wanna squish them like a bug (affectionate)
I've spent much of my week looking for a video game to play. And here, at the end, I'm empty handed. It's a frustrating feeling, when you see something that looks charming, and you find that it is full of other issues. Such as balance, bugs or content.
And that is the thing, it is visuals that hook me the fastest. Especially if I'm not looking for anything "specific" to play. If the visuals look cute, and cosy, I'm going to take a second look. For the the artist side in me is pulled in.
The problem is, visuals don't equal a good game. You could make this pretty game, and try to hit all the right notes there and have a backend that is just a mess.
What's worse though is having a game that markets itself via its visuals as one thing, while its gameplay is something quite different. A case in point is Bandle Tale.
In my meanderings this week, I came across this game. I haven't been able to get it out of my head since. I mean look at its menu screen:
Isn't that gorgeous? It might be just me, but it screams cosy and easy and fun, right?
Well the problem is, when you look at the game play itself...it's nothing but that. Instead you have a crafting game that is grindy, sometimes confusing, and down right frustrating. And it never gets better. In other words, not really a cozy game.
It's a huge shame. For the game itself looks so cool. I've never been more drawn to an art style more than now.
I mean look at it! It looks so...so whimsical! As for why, I still don't know. I imagine I'll be asking that question for a long while.
