Elegant Wedding at the Fairmont Banff Springs

This elegant wedding at the Fairmont Banff Springs was such an incredible day. The Banff Springs has a rich history in this pretty mountain town and is affectionately known as the Castle in the Rockies. Originally built in 1888 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, this interesting building is one of Canada’s last standing Railway hotels. Walking through the grand hallways you are presented with picturesque mountain views through every ornate window. These are only a few of the reasons why it is truly is a magical place to get married.

Changing Plans and an Unpredictable Year

This couple are two of the most thoughtful and kind humans we have had the pleasure to meet. Their deep connection and care for each other was such an honour to witness and we both feel so lucky that they chose us to be the photographers to create all of these memories of their day in the mountains. We first met these two for their sunrise hiking engagement session earlier in the summer. They both met working at the same company and connected quickly through their shared love of travel and good food. It was incredibly important for them to have their family with them on their wedding day and Covid presented a few challenges throughout the planning process. As their dates, guest lists and plans changed multiple times, they persevered and ended up having a perfect day!

A Romantic Ceremony in Mount Stephen Hall

Mariana and Craig had a vision for their day and it was so stunning! An elegant and classic theme was considered through every last detail. Pops of blue styled into the decor were carried through so beautifully in the mountain landscapes surrounding them. Including the icy blue of the glacier-fed rivers and lakes in Banff National Park.

The day began in the Strathcona Room where the girls were getting ready. A balcony overlooked Mount Stephen Hall where the ceremony space was being decorated in pillars of flowers. Alegro YYC was setting up and rehearsing their songs, echoing throughout the hundred-year-old walls. It set the romantic mood for the day to come.

Letters were shared to one another in the morning. Words expressing how excited they were for this day to finally be here. This day, made even more special by the difficult year they both had. We think it’s fair to say this wedding was worth postponing 3 times to get to this incredible day! The emotion in the room and love for these two was so beautiful to witness and capture through these images.

Craig walked down the aisle with their excited pup Peanut while Mariana held her father’s arm down the grand spiral staircase. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when Mariana entered the room. She was absolutely stunning! We all watched as these two sweet souls shared words, exchanged rings and signed the documents necessary to be legally wed. After their ceremony, Mariana and Craig decided to share their first dance in the open ballroom. Serenaded by the musical duo playing their song. It was magic.

The Most Beautiful Summer Portraits Exploring Banff National Park

After the ceremony, we made our way outside to explore Banff National Park for their portraits. A beautiful blue classic car pulled up to the doors on the Fairmont. Mariana’s parents had surprised them with a stylish ride for the afternoon! We cruised along the mountain roads and found some incredible locations for their portraits together. By the shores of the Bow River and through to Lake Minnewanka where the mountains tower over the lakeside views. Banff was really showing off that day!

An Elegant Candlelit Reception

When we re-entered Mt Steven hall it was completely transformed to reveal their reception space. Two long tables were adorned with greenery and candles with the bride and grooms sweetheart table centred between the two. Rose petals marked out a giant M symbolizing their new joined name at the other side of the room. Everyone cheered as the newlyweds entered the room. Following their grand entrance, the evening flowed perfectly between delicious courses and heartfelt speeches. Desert was a platter of Brazilian deserts paying tribute to Mariana’s family heritage. The night closed with dancing and a sparkler send-off. Every moment and every detail was such a joy to photograph and we hope you enjoy looking through their story.

Banff Winter Elopement at Tunnel Mountain

This Banff Winter Elopement at Tunnel Mountain was one of the warmest winter weddings we have photographed in a long time. The sun was shining and the weather was perfect for this dreamy mountain elopement at one of our favourite outdoor ceremony locations in the area. This was Hana and Nikk’s first time visiting Banff. They had come out from Maryland, USA for a winter trip with their snowboards and wedding gear ready for an adventure. 

Their Story

When Hana and Nikk first got in contact with us we instantly knew they were our kind of people. They met working at a rafting company, their first date was at a climbing gym and they wanted none of the hoopla involved in a big wedding. Just them, the mountains and a story to write home about. There were so many beautiful details in this elopement, we hardly know where to begin. Nikk is a talented graphic designer and custom made the best little Yeti mugs for them both. The logo he designed had elements that represented their adventures together up to this point in their lives. He also handmade Hana’s hairpiece which matched his boutonnière by carving wood and painting it to make it look like bone. 

An outdoor winter ceremony in the mountains

Hana tied up her winter boots by the fire and walked out in the snow to meet Nikk. The sun lit up her beautiful white dress but not nearly enough to distract from her smile! Klaus led them through a lovely intimate ceremony and they both shared their favourite things about each other. Afterwards, we took in the amazing view as we soaked up all the afternoon winter sun. We went on a little adventure through the woods for some more photos and then went back to their room at Hidden Ridge Resort to warm up by the fire with a hot chocolate. We feel so lucky to have shared this amazing day with this positive and fun couple and we hope you enjoy a look into their winter wedding in the mountains!

Emily and Alan’s Banff Winter Wedding was the perfect day filled with lots of snow and surrounded by friends and family from around the world. When we first met with Emily and Alan a few months before their wedding Alan was hoping for it to snow on their day, so he could celebrate a white wedding and Christmas with his family and friends coming in from a hot New Zealand summer. After waking up to 30cm of fresh snow in Banff on their big day we knew Alan was going to be all smiles!

Buffalo Mountain Lodge Wedding

When it snows this much in the mountains all you feel like is being in a warm cabin next to a fire with a hot chocolate and this couple had thought of it all! They were lucky with a mild day and decided to still have their ceremony outside across the road from their venue at Tunnel Mountain Reservoir. The kind staff shoveled out an aisle leading to an open space for their guests to watch them say their vows. It was one of the most beautiful ceremonies we have ever seen. We were all surrounded by snow falling, with warm drinks in hand, white watching the beautiful mountains in front of us while Emily and Alan said their beautiful vows.

Their Story

Emily and Alan met in London, UK and it was immediately a perfect match. From his best mans speech, Emily ticked not on one of Alan’s boxes but pretty much them all! Alan grew up in New Zealand and ever since his family can remember has been fascinated with Hockey. A sport not so common in the warm north island of New Zealand. When he met the beautiful Emily, smart, funny with similar interests and Canadian! well the rest is history. 

We feel so lucky that we got to share this beautiful day with these two lovely people. There is something so special and intimate about winter weddings and Emily and Alan really embraced the season when planning their wedding. We hope you enjoy a little look into their day.

This Lake Minnewanka Elopement was such a beautiful day! When Lucio and Breanna first got in contact with us and told us about their plans to elope in the mountains, we couldn’t wait to help plan their day. They were coming in from Winnipeg and they knew they wanted to get married in Banff National Park. It can be difficult to try and plan a destination wedding or elopement when you can’t physically be there to check everything out. We suggested a few locations and we all agreed that Lake Minnewanka was the special spot for them.

Their Story

We met Lucio and Breanna in Golden, BC where they had rented a beautiful Airbnb for the week. They helped each other get ready for the days adventure. With their vows and flowers, we were on our way to Lake Minnewanka to meet up with their commissioner. After a beautiful drive through the mountains we found a perfect little spot under some trees on the lake shore and watched as they shared their vows with one another. Just the two of them, with the mountains as their witnesses. After their ceremony we explored around the lake and wandered through the forest for some portraits. We then made our way to Moraine Lake for some incredible sunset portraits in front of the beautiful blue water. We feel so lucky to have shared this day with this beautiful couple for their Banff Elopement in the mountains.

Banff Post-Wedding Adventure Session

When Lauren and David got in touch with us wanting to do a Banff Post-Wedding Adventure Session we couldn’t wait to be a part of it all! Lauren’s grandfather was from Alberta and she fell in love with the Canadian Rockies after traveling to the mountains with her family. These two are from Brooklyn, New York, and got married last year. Even though it was a perfect day it rained consistently all day preventing them from getting the outdoor photos they had dreamed of. Rather than dwelling on the weather, these two decided it was a great excuse to go somewhere amazing for their first anniversary and get some epic wedding photos. They decided that Banff National Park was the perfect spot to do this! 

Their Story

These two have a pretty sweet story to how they met. Lauren noticed David every morning on their morning commute on the subway. It took her months to build up the courage but she finally struck up a conversation with David. He told us he was glad she did that day because the next week he was changing jobs and therefore his morning commute meaning he might not have ever seen her again. 

Taking Wedding Photos in Banff National Park

On a traditional wedding day we are usually fighting the time. The ceremony ends and there is only a certain amount of time in the early afternoon for portraits. We love doing Post Wedding Adventure Sessions as it allows us to have a little more control over the timing and location of the photos. We can choose the time of day when the sun is low and the light is perfect. You have unlimited choices of locations and can take your time really enjoying the experience of exploring some amazing places. Lauren and David were staying at the Johnston Canyon Bungalows while they were in the area. David was recovering from a knee surgery so they told us this was their first trip where they didn’t have much planned. Enjoying taking it each day at a time and being flexible with their plans. They took the time to check out some new locations and views before our shoot finding locations that felt meaningful to them. On the day of their shoot we got lucky with a beautiful afternoon. With some sun streaming through the trees and a little bit of cloud cover creating dramatic lighting on the surrounding mountains. We had such a fun time exploring the mountains with these two lovely people and we feel so lucky that we were able to create these memories for them!

We knew it’s going to be a good day when Katie and John told us their wedding shoes were hiking boots and they were up for an adventure! Katie and John’s day began at the magical Banff Springs on a mild but windy winters day. These two had travelled with their closest family to the Rocky Mountains from Minnesota in memory of Katie’s late mother who had always wanted to travel through the area. Walking down the aisle in her Smartwool Socks, Katie met John in front of the fireplace in the cosy Angus room. In a ceremony comprised of beautiful readings and tales of the two’s adventures in life so far, Katie and John declared their love and promises for one another. After everyone was left feeling warm with all of the love in the room, it was time to brave the wintery landscape for some photos. We all went for a stroll out onto some of Banff’s frozen lakes, soaking in the incredible scenery and soft dreamy light. We feel so lucky to have been a part of these two’s journey and it was a pleasure creating all these memories of their day. Congratulations Katie and John, we both wish you a lifetime of happiness.
