Katara - what makes you cry easily?

Everything makes me cry. If a book, or show, or movie has anything sad, I will sob. I am watching She-Ra with my sister, and I literally lost it at the season 3 finale a couple of weeks ago. We had to turn off the tv so I could get tissues. In terms of real life stuff, I haven’t cried much lately, but I think what sets me off more than general sadness is when I feel lonely or misunderstood.

Earth - what motivates you?

I used to be super motivated by external validation! Good grades, pats on the head, getting into a good college. Then when I ended up at my “good college” I didn’t feel any sort of purpose or happiness with myself, and after taking a year off after my freshman year to sort some things out, and now being a year away from graduating, I think I can pretty sincerely say I’m motivated by my own happiness and being able to help others.

Ember Island - what is your ideal vacation?

Probably any sort of beach town in like France or Spain. Going to the beach, shopping at markets, getting to eat amazing, inexpensive food and drink amazing, inexpensive wine is a dream that I miss very much.

The Bankhar is an ancient livestock guardian dog breed. It is raised with sheep or goats and view them as its family, living and sleeping with the herd to keep wolves and snow leopards away. They are sometimes referred to as “four eyed dogs,” because they have a pair of light colored spots above their eyes. There are folktales about them being able to see spirits.

Bankhar were nearly lost as a breed during Mongolia’s communist period, when the government tried to “settle” nomads and their flocks in fenced-in agricultural areas, and most of the dogs were killed. There was even a brief fashion for bankhar-fur coats in Moscow.

The breed is making a comeback thanks to the Mongolian Bankhar Dog Project, which used DNA testing to find remaining pureblood bankhars and is breeding them and giving puppies to herders to raise with their flocks.
