Blossoming Banlaine, Part 2
“Memories”
Ban grinds his teeth as he peers around the cardboard tree. For some stupid reason, the director had decided the trees should be pink instead of green. Who had ever heard of something so stupid? But Mr. Dreyfus said it added to the “magic” or some shit so pink it was.
But that’s not what has caught his attention. He ignores the paint dripping from his brush as he watches that jackass Helbram stumble through his lines. Everyone is frustrated, but to her credit Elaine is keeping her cool as they work through the scene.
“Silence, uh... silence. For a while,” Helbram says. “Um, Titania...” “Robin, take off his head,” Elaine prompts.
“Right! Yes. Robin, take off his head; Titania, music call and strike the dead that uh... wait, don’t tell me.”
Ban huffs, blowing his bangs from his eyes. “Than common sleep of all these five the sense,” he mutters. “Everyone knows that.”
The scene continues on, stuttering to a halt every other line as Helbram tries to remember his cues, until Meliodas erupts into laughter from his place on the ground. “Shush!” Elaine chastises him. “Bottom is asleep, you can’t laugh during this.”
“What is going on?” Mr. Dreyfus shouts from the back of the auditorium. The lights change as he begins storming up the aisle, Elaine and Meliodas bickering as Helbram paces away, studying the script in his hand.
“Hey,” Ban hisses.
Helbram looks up, frowning when he sees Ban crook his finger to call him over. Dreyfus has reached the stage and is standing over Meliodas giving instructions, so Helbram walks towards him. “Who, me?” he asks.
Ban grabs him by the shirt and tugs him behind the tree. “Yeah, you,” he hisses. “What is your problem? The show opens next week, you should have been off-book by now!”
“I’ve been busy!” Helbram protests. “Besides, it’s none of your business—”
“Oberon is the most important part of the play, so you better get it together,” Ban growls. “If you embarrass Elaine up there you’re going to have to answer to me, got it?”
Helbram pushes him off and narrows his eyes. “You don’t know anything,” he snaps. “Go back to painting trees, and let the actors worry about the show.”
Ban grips his paintbrush tightly but Helbram is being called over, so he curses under his breath as he furiously does just that.
He and Meliodas walk together through the student parking lot after rehearsal, and Ban gives him a earful. “He’s just so arrogant,” Ban complains. “And he’s a shit actor. Oberon is supposed to be strong and confident. Helbram plays him like... like the damn tooth fairy.”
Meliodas bursts out laughing. “Too bad you bombed the audition so badly. You could have gotten a part instead of being on stage crew.”
“Shut it,” Ban mutters. Truth is, he likes being behind the scenes; he can watch Elaine all day. Who hasn’t even looked at him since that day, and who is clearly carrying the entire show on her shoulders. “And another thing—”
He catches sight of her out of the corner of his eye, and leaves Meliodas shouting “Hey!” as he turns and walks over to her. He finds Elaine arguing on her cell phone, ending the call with a frustrated huff when he approaches. “Everything okay?” he asks.
She looks at him with eyes that are furious and hurt. “My stupid brother can’t pick me up. Now I have to walk home.”
“I’ll give you a ride.” Elaine gives him a look and he groans. “Meliodas is with me, and I’m sure Elizabeth will be coming with us too, she always does anymore. Please, you’re doing me a favor, I can’t stand those two.”
Elaine looks around him, and he peeks over his shoulder. He follows her gaze to see his nightmare come to life: Meliodas has Elizabeth pressed against the side of his car as they both make out furiously. “See?” he says wearily.
She laughs. “I don’t know what she sees in him,” Elaine says.
“Me neither. You coming or what?”
Elaine presses her lips together, studying his face, and then nods. “Yeah, okay. Thanks.”
Ban grins. They start walking back together, and he wonders if he should put his arm around her. Too forward? But maybe she likes that? His palms break out into a sweat and he rubs them on his jeans. Maybe he should offer his arm? Or offer to carry her? No, that’s stupid. Carry her books maybe? “You’ve saved me twice now,” Elaine says, giving him a side glance that makes his heart skip a beat. “One more time and I might owe you.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” he answers, his throat suddenly dry.
