#5- Banshee Chapter
Year- 2013
Source- iTunes ($4.99 to rent)
Plot- A writer goes missing after obtaining a military grade drug used in the ML-Ultra experiments.
My Review- this movie is creepy. It seemed like t couldn’t decide if it wanted to be a regular 3rd person perspective or a found footage film, which I did not appreciate. It swung wildly from documentary to comedy to horror, which I Did appreciate. I found parts to be corny but I also jumped a few times. I recommend this movie (late night, preferably alone for a scare), but this is not a classic.
I give this movie- 🔪🔪🔪 I was creeped out, I absolutely checked the locks before going to sleep.

If you’re a fan of H.P. Lovecraft, psychological horror, and sci-fi flicks, I’d recommend you check out Banshee Chapter. Not only is it based off of sci-fi master-of-the-arts H.P. Lovecraft’s stories, it also takes a spin on real, psychological, experiments conducted by the U.S. Government in our not-so-distant past. The experiments that took place during Project MKUltra, which spanned from the 1950s, to mid 70s.
When James, a writer and journalist who is heavily tinkering with and investigating the experiments of Project MKUltra, decides to do some experimenting of his own with one of the research drugs, James starts to hear strange, radio-static-like sounds, begins bleeding out of his facial orifices, and goes missing. When friend and fellow journalist finds out that James has vanished, she starts doing her own bit of investigating to find out what really happened to him.
The only clue she has is a VHS tape with scattered sounds and music. She follows clues that eventually lead her to the house of Thomas Blackburn (Ted Levine), who’s character mimics Hunter S. Thompson down to the bone cigarettes. Which is a bit too much for my taste. After a series of events, the two find that the chemicals and the frequent chatter of the numbers station entail more than they expected.

The blend of real stock footage from the MKUltra Project, mixed in with fabricated footage of test subjects and some first-person camera shots, keep you intrigued as you’re piecing together the events as they unfold. Some overdramatic suspense leading up to jump-scares may be a bit cheesy at times, but I believe that adds to the overall effect, and when it really gets down to it, Banshee Chapter is a notably imaginative thriller.
Written and directed by Blair Erickson, Banshee Chapter Made its premier at Fantasy Filmfest in August of 2013, and was recently shown at the Toronto After Dark film festival in October. The independent film made its mark in horror cinema and was picked up by on-demand services in December.
