Top 5 fictional ladies not in ASOIAF
Gudrun of Norse heroic mythology. I'm using the name given to her in the Eddas and I believe it's the same as the account in the Volsunga Saga, however she is known as Kriemhild in the Nibelungenlied and Gutrune in Wagners Ring Cycle wich is based on the former. I made a post before with handy-dandy bullet points on why she is fucking awesome, but it's too long too awesome to be condensed. You'll just have to pick up the Poetic Edda if you want to find out why she is perfect.
Lady Macbeth. I've been devouring an unhealthy amount of Shakespeare the past few days so it may be because of that but Lady Macbeth is actually awesome because contrary to the high school english curriculum she is actually very human and multi-layered. WAY more than just a "bad bitch" type cast.
Dante's Beatrice. Dante proclaimed her as being his lifelong love and muse. She was the subject of La Vita Nuova, and in The Divine Comedy she, as an angel on the same level of Rachel, descends into Hell to charge Virgil with guiding the mortal Dante through Hell and Purgatory to the gates of Paradise. It may seem diminutive to call her "Dante's", but I am doing this not because she is his but because that is not the name of the woman whom she is based on. They met when they were children and were said to have shared a life long love (from a distance) despite having been married to others. It's basically the most perfect and heartbreaking thing ever if you read Dante's work. She, as a character in Dante's poetry, embodies pure ecstatic grace and perfection. Don't talk to me about Dante Alighieri. I will cry.
Queene Guinevere of Arthurian Legend. Mainly I've grown to love the character because, in Arthurian Legend, she's been characterized in so many different ways. In very early written account of AL she was just a side character with no real plot power (much like Arthur ironically). Then you have Marie de France who characterized her as a terrible villain who publicly cheats on Arthur and actively corrupts and undermines him. My favorite is Chretien de Troyes' Guinevere who is more realistic, and it is this version that sets up the motif of the Guinevere/Arthur/Lancelot love triangle.
Claire Underwood. Because fuck you. And this post is too long as it is.
Read more Sappho. Just whatever you like.
