I think I’ve learned something about the writing process
I think I’ve learned something about the writing process, and I hope it might help some of y’all:
We like to construct writing as something that you do, currently. An action. Writing, as we’ve defined it, is the act of presenting words into an order that conveys meaning. Writing as a verb requires other verbs as well: typing, scribbling, editing, etc.
But I think this is some bullshit.
Writing is also observing, thinking, fantasizing. It’s the daydreams we have while in the car, staring at the landscape. It’s the half formed plot that might work in your story someday, but also might not. It’s the spontaneous way your brain can generate a line, but while you’re washing the dishes or watering the plants.
What I’m trying to say is that the process of writing is a cycle. There are periods in the cycle of gathering, periods when we are meant not to use those other verbs (typing, scribbling, editing) but use more generative verbs (observing, thinking, fantasizing). We collect these thoughts, let them percolate, and then later distribute them to the page.
What I’m trying to say is it’s okay if you aren’t typing out your manuscript right now. It’s okay if it’s been a while since you updated your fanfic. It’s okay if you spend more time thinking about writing than “actually writing” itself because... You are gathering right now. And that, itself, is vital.
Rest assured, I’m not going anywhere. This is probably the dumbest shit I’ve seen tumblr pull, but I’ll be slow dancing in this burning room until we all fry.
I am so sorry for the long wait on Along Came a Spider. I’ve had an exceptionally difficult holiday weekend, but I promise that I’m working on the next chapter (it’s currently at 3k and growing). It should be posted sometime in the upcoming week.
I bought the the twilight illustrated guide online and it’s gonna take up to six weeks to get here. only one week has passed and I’m already tired of waiting, how am I gonna make it through the next five??
